Now Scotty Nguyen can call himself a Cherokee.
Nguyen has signed a sponsorship agreement to help promote poker at Cherokee Casinos, which has five casinos scattered throughout Oklahoma. Cherokee Casino has poker rooms at three of its locations: West Siloam, Roland, and Tulsa.
Nguyen agreed to wear Cherokee Casino logo items at all final table appearances and promote the poker room as he travels throughout the country and abroad. He has also agreed to be available for at least 12 weeks over the next year to host seminars on poker strategy, play poker in the casino, provide poker tips to local players, and help the dealers perfect their technique.
The Scotty Nguyen Poker Challenge began Oct. 29, and concludes with a $5,000 no-limit hold'em championship this weekend. Satellites for the event are now taking place at all three of its poker rooms. The final will take place in Tulsa.
Nguyen will be playing in the event, and he'll be bringing along Card Player of the Year points leader John Phan with him.
Nguyen won the World Series of Poker main event in 1988 and, from 2000 to 2004, he has been in the money more than 100 times at tournaments.
Some of Nguyen's other poker achievements include victories at the limit hold'em and seven-card stud events at the 2003 Legends of Poker, the 2001 WSOP pot-limit Omaha event, two World Poker Open titles at Foxwoods, the 1997 WSOP Omaha high-low event, and the Bellagio Five Diamond pot-limit Omaha event.
