Online poker in Italy contracted in June for the first time since regulation and legalistaion last year.

State gambling regulator AAMS reported a drop of 5.5 percent in the amount wagered on poker from €200 million in May back to the April level of €189 million.

Seasonal factors, primarily the start of summer, can largely be attributed as the cause of the decline.

A number of pan-European online poker sites operate with licence in Italy.

The success of tournaments such as the European Poker Tour San Remo has prompted PokerStars to launch its own Italian Poker Tour and the World Poker Tour to host its first event in Venice in May.
