William Hill, one of the UK’s oldest and largest bookmakers and owner of William Hill Poker, today confirmed it was to move its online operations to Gibraltar in a bid to save on its tax bill in the UK.

The company said it will move its online betting service, sportsbook, and online fixed-odds games. While no explicit mention was made of casino and poker as these business units already operate out of the rock, the company said around 75 employees would make the move, joining other core William Hill Online workers at its headquarters in Gibraltar.

William Hill Poker is already registered and regulated in Gibraltar but the move will be a big blow to the British government. William Hill paid almost £300m in UK taxes and levies in 2008.

The UK’s largest bookmaker, Ladbrokes, is widely believed to be considering a similar move.
