Jeremy “thechemist83” Gaubert Wins World Poker Open
Chris Moneymaker Falls Short of Title With Third-Place Finish

Heading into the final table of the 2009 World Poker Open Championship in Tunica, Mississippi, Chris Moneymaker held roughly 40 percent of the chips in play and was a huge favorite to take down his first major title since winning the 2003 World Series of Poker main event. Unfortunately for the Team PokerStars pro, a series of speed bumps along the way saw him go out in third place, good for $60,110.

Moneymaker was actually freerolling in the $5,000 championship event, thanks to his win earlier in the week in event No. 9, the pot-limit Omaha event for $15,889, which included his main-event buy-in. On his final hand, Moneymaker got it in with top pair against his opponent’s spade-flush draw. The fateful spade hit the river and Moneymaker’s run came to an end.

The heads-up match came down to unknown Steve Hamontree, a business owner from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Jeremy “thechemist83” Gaubert, a professional online player from Thibodaux, Louisiana. The final hand and pot went to Gaubert, when his pocket aces held up against Hamontree’s top pair of tens. For his victory, Gaubert earned $192,953 and a $10,000 seat into the WPT Southern Poker Championship in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Interestingly enough, the 2008 main event was also decided by pocket aces, when Clonie Gowen’s pair held to defeat B.J. McBrayer.

This was the second largest score of Gaubert’s career, after he chopped up the Sunday Million on PokerStars for just over $230,000. That same day, he also finished second in the Sunday Mulligan for an additional $178,000. He now has over $1.3 million in winnings.

Other notables at the final table included Chad Brown and Tommy Vedes.

The World Poker Open is a longtime staple of the poker circuit and was once featured on the WPT. It was dropped from the televised schedule in 2008 and the buy-in was lowered from $10,000 to $5,000 to accommodate the smaller field sizes.
