PokerStars likes its world records.
In July, the site welcomed 65,000 players for the largest poker tournament field ever assembled. Today, it announced that it had eclipsed its previous record for the most players in an online cardroom at one time, with 307,016 players competing at 42,118 tables at the same time on Sept. 6.
The record has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
PokerStars had already held the record for “most players in an Internet poker room,” but the new mark eclipsed the old total by more than 100,000 players.
World-record attempts are nothing new for the poker industry, although they have often awarded added value to the player.
Full Tilt Poker tried to beat out PokerStars’ world record for the most players in a single tournament back when it was “just” 35,000 players, setting up a $5, 50,000-person field on July 19 with $250,000 added to the prize pool.
But the leading poker site quickly responded, setting up a $1, 65,000-person tourney and matching the entire prize pool for a massive overlay.
Those tournaments saw a couple of players with modest buy-ins collect monster paydays, to the tune of $13,000 on PokerStars and $45,000 on Full Tilt.
