The teams lined up against each last week with the lone goal of being the last one standing, or, because this is poker, sitting.
When it was all said and done, Team Scotland came out as the winner of the Paddypowerpoker.com Grand Slam 2006, which was held at the Star City Casino in Birmingham, England, Jan. 11 and 12.
The Grand Slam pitted seven teams of six players who represented the respected countries of England, France, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Sweden and Wales. The contest was filmed and will be televised as six 1 hour shows in Europe beginning in March.
The Grand Slam awarded prizes to both winner and teams. Individual teammates who made the top three won 50,000, 30,000 and 20,000 Euros respectively. The members of the top who accumulated the most points split 110,000 Euros. Points were awarded according to amount of time players lasted.
Team Scotland took home the top prize after three of its members made the final table. Rory Matthews and Philip Starrs of Scotland finished third and fourth, and team member Scott McQueston finished seventh.
Lars Kiestrup of Sweden took home the 50,000 Euro first prize for winning the slam outright and Iwan Jones of Wales was the runner-up, which was good for the 30,000 Euro second prize. Matthews earned 20,000 Euros for third place, as well as his share of the top team prize.
The tournament was opened to invited European pros, but two qualifiers from Ireland, Northern Ireland and England qualified at Paddypowerpoker.com. The buy-in for the event was 5,000 Euros.
France finished second, with Wales, Ireland, Sweden, England and Northern Ireland wrapping up the field.
