WPT -- Cornel Cimpan Wins the World Poker Finals

The final table of the World Poker Tour World Poker Finals began today at 4 p.m. EST at Foxwoods Hotel and Casino in New England. The final six players were all professionals, and by the end of the night one of them walked away with close to $1 million in prize money. It took 187 hands to decide a champion. Heads-up play began 146 hands into the proceedings, after Lee Markholt, Curt Kohlberg, Eric Froehlich, and Matt Stout all had hit the rail. When the final match began, Soheil Shamseddin held a lead with 7,705,000 to the 2,885,000 of Cornel Cimpan.

Cimpan fought back early when he was all in with pocket queens and they held up against the A-K of Shamseddin. Cimpan was up to 4.5 million at that point, and he took the chip lead four hands later. Shamseddin took the lead back and grew his stack back to 6 million, but Cimpan doubled up again, this time with pocket aces, to jump back out in front. Cimpan found himself with the right cards in the right spot for a third time in a row against Shamseddin (A-J over K-J) a few hands later, and he claimed the victory to win his second WPT title. Cimpan won his first WPT title at the L.A. Poker Classic last season. Read on below to see every elimination hand from the final table.

Lee Markholt Eliminated in Sixth Place ($166,069)

With blinds at 20,000-40,000 with a 4,000 ante, Matt Stout raised to 100,000 from the cutoff, and Lee Markholt reraised all in for 236,000 from the button. Stout made the call, and they turned over their cards:

Markholt was eliminated in sixth place, and Stout grew his stack close to 2 million.

Curt Kohlberg Eliminated in Fifth Place ($199,283)

With blinds at 25,000-50,000 with a 5,000 ante, Cornel Cimpan raised to 125,000 under the gun, and Soheil Shamseddin made the call from the cutoff. Curt Kohlberg reraised all in for 690,000 from the small blind, and Cimpan mucked. Shamseddin made the call, and they flipped over their cards:

Board: A Q 5 J 2

Kohlberg was eliminated in fifth place, and Shamseddin grew his stack to 2 million.

Eric Froehlich Eliminated in Fourth Place ($232,496)

With blinds at 25,000-50,000 with a 5,000 ante, Soheil Shamseddin raised to 150,000 under the gun and Eric Froehlich reraised all in for 975,000 on the small blind. Shamseddin made the call after much deliberation, and the two players turned over their cards:

Froehlich: A K
Shamseddin: 4 4

Board: 10 5 2 9 8

Froehlich was eliminated on the hand in fourth place, and Shamseddin grew his stack to 3 million.

Matt Stout Eliminated in Third Place ($265,710)

With blinds at 60,000-120,000 with a 15,000 ante, Cornel Cimpan raised to 350,000 on the button. Soheil Shamseddin made the call from the small blind, and Matt Stout called all in for 345,000 from the big blind. The flop was dealt 9 6 6, and Shamseddin bet. Cimpan mucked, and the two live players flipped over their cards:

Shamseddin: A 6

Turn and River: 2 and K

Stout was eliminated on the hand in third place, and Shamseddin grew his stack to 8 million.

With blinds at 100,000-200,000 with a 20,000 ante, Soheil Shamseddin raised to 500,000 and Cornel Cimpan reraised all in. Shamseddin made the all-in call, and they flipped over their cards:

Shamseddin was eliminated in second place, and Cimpan claimed his second WPT title.
