Online Poker -- Shaun Deeb Says He's Quitting TourneysSteve Gross Still Holds Monster Lead Heading Into Final Month |
|
Steve “gboro780” Gross still sits in first place overall by 1,048 points in the Card Player Online Player of the Year race, but that is hardly the story here. The online multi-table community was shaken to the core this week when legendary grinder and third-place resident Shaun “TedsFishFry” Deeb (pictured right) said he’s retiring from poker tournaments.
In his own words, Deeb wrote, “Yah, I’m burntout. I hate them. I’m done with them. I’m gunna take rest of year off, hopefully, and go do something else. Yah, poker was good for a while but **** I hate what I’ve become.” (Punctuation Added)
The news stunned most, and the few who weren’t fazed just figured it for an elaborate hoax. But true to his word, Deeb has yet to buy in into an online tournament since his statement. He did, however, play in the EPT Vilamoura championship in Portugal, busting in day two, but explained that he had already won a couple satellites online and needed to honor those commitments. Later, he explained that he wasn’t quitting poker entirely, just tournaments.
If Deeb remains committed to his self-ban, it will make winning the OPOY that much easier for Gross, who would only have to keep David “Sir Sands” Sands (second) and Thayer “THAY3R” Rasmussen (fourth) off of his heels through December.
The rest of the top 10 is represented by Jonathan “shipitobv” Delong (fifth), Chris “Moorman1” Moorman (sixth), Joseph “hoodini10” Udine (seventh), Jeremiah “Believer82” Vinsant (eighth), Gregory “gregior” Howard (ninth) and Daniel “djk123” Kelly (tenth) and would need quite a few major scores to catch him.
