Carlos Mortensen Moves into the Top 10; Sorel Mizzi and Jared Jaffee Rejoin the Top 10
Carlos Mortensen won the World Poker Tour Hollywood Poker Open in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, on March 24, and he captured his third WPT title. This tied him with Gus Hansen for the most WPT wins in a career. Mortensen was awarded $393,820 in prize money and 840 Card Player Player of the Year points. The win came on the heels of a strong run at the L.A. Poker Classic for the former world champion.
He won a $1,000 no-limit hold’em event at Commerce Casino ($273,500 and 1,152 points) and he followed that up with two ninth-place cashes. He won $9,450 in prize money and 58 points for finishing in ninth in a $3,000 six-handed no-limit hold’em event, and then he cashed in ninth place in the $10,000 no-limit hold’em championship, adding $100,128 and 200 points. Mortensen now holds 2,334 points for the year and he is now in seventh place overall.
Two players joined the top 10 in the POY race once again during March. Jared Jaffee began the year with a strong run at the Southern Poker Championship in January, and he won 1,358 points and $192,971 in prize money. He recently finished as runner-up in the Wynn Classic championship event and returned to the top 10. He won $246,477 and 960 points. Jaffee now holds 2,318 points total and he sits in eighth place.
Sorel Mizzi is another young professional who has been consistent all year long. His biggest score came at the Aussie Millions main event in January, wherein he cashed in third place to take home $638,004 and 1,280 points. He recently made his fourth and fifth final tables of the year at the Wynn Classic. Mizzi finished fifth in a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event, winning $10,389 and 120 points, and he followed that up with his first tournament win this year. He won a $2,000 no-limit hold’em event and was awarded $85,417 and 312 points. Mizzi is now in 10th place with 2,150 points.
