Phil Ivey Tears Up High Stakes Online Cash Game

Phil IveyThe biggest cash games online have been relegated to the cap games on Full Tilt for the past few weeks. Many players, including Phil Galfond and Patrik Antonius, have complained that the cap pot-limit Omaha games are not ideal, but unfortunately, that’s where all of the action has been.

“I really dislike cap PLO,” Galfond wrote in his blog. “I think it’s a boring game with few complexities, and those complexities are more about math and running hand scenarios through calculators off the table than they are about psychology, leveling, and adjusting to opponents and game flow. If cap PLO are the only games running, I’ll play, but I hope people start playing something else.”

Whether or not the action will move elsewhere has yet to be seen, but one player who hasn’t minded the game is Phil Ivey, who recently won nearly $700,000 from Luukie21.

Ivey played just over 650 hands against Luukie21 at stakes of $500-$1,000 with a $40,000 cap and made off with $693,000 of the unknown’s money. After giving some back to other players, Ivey ended his session with a $620,000 profit.

Several of the pots reached their $80,000 cap, including a situation wherein Ivey flopped bottom set and got it in against Luukie21’s turned two pair.

Ivey min-raised to $2,000, and Luukie21 made the call. The flop came down 10Diamond Suit 3Spade Suit 2Heart Suit, and Luukie21 checked. Ivey bet $3,000, and Luukie21 called.

The turn was the 7Heart Suit, and Luukie21 checked once again. Ivey bet $8,000, and Luukie 21 check-raised to $34,000, leaving himself with just $1,000 behind. Ivey put him all in, and the two players revealed their hands.

Luukie21 showed down QSpade Suit JClub Suit 7Diamond Suit 3Club Suit for a turned two pair, but Ivey showed QDiamond Suit 3Diamond Suit 2Spade Suit 2Club Suit for bottom set. According to the Card Player Poker Odds Calculator, Ivey was a 92.5 percent favorite to win the pot, and he did so when the QHeart Suit hit the river.
