Soren Eriksen, a two-time New Zealand poker champion from Denmark but living down under, has won a gold medal at the BrewNZ awards for his micro-brewed “The Big Smoke” beer.
The 30-year old, who used some of his poker winnings to start a brewing venture called 8 Wired Brewing, told the New Zealand Herald that, “"I never wanted to be a professional poker player because it’s not a very nice environment. Sure, I could probably make good money grinding the games in Vegas, but I would go nuts within weeks."
Eriksen, who has a background as a biochemist, also told the paper that, “Brewing is all about bio-chemistry, but it’s always on a much lower technical scale. Brewing is great because it’s both science and art.”
