She started playing poker in 1989 with the help of Barry Greenstein. He taught her how to play poker in exchange for teaching him how to speak Vietnamese. They grinded it out in the side games together for years, and she eventually built her bankroll and upped the stakes. Tran is now one of the few women who compete in ?The Big Game.?
At the advice of Greenstein, Tran began playing tournaments. She made her first major cash at the 1998 World Series of Poker in a limit hold?em event. Tran finished fourth but bested that the following year. She finished second for almost $113,000 in the 1999 $2,500 limit hold?em event. In 2005, Tran came in fourth at the WSOP Tournament Circuit championship, but her biggest cash came in 2006. She won more than $472,000 for finishing third at a televised World Poker Tour final table at the World Poker Finals. Her lifetime earnings from tournaments are well into the seven-figure range.
