Note: An impromtu schedule change means that Day 1 will not end with the conclusion of Level 10. Because we are so close to the money, the tournament staff has decided to continue play until we reach the money. Players will take a fifteen-minute break at the conclusion of the level and come back to begin Level 11. Big Hands:

Runner-Runner, Double Gutter - Bill Gazes Eliminated

On a flop of J53, Bill Gazes moved all in with pocket jacks and his opponent called him down with pocket sevens. Gazes had the best of it with top set, but the 4 gave his opponent new life with an inside straight draw. The river brought the 6, and Ball Gazes was eliminated with trip jacks against a seven-high straight. Unbelievable! Gazes flopped top set and was eliminated after his opponent went runner-runner to catch the inside straight.

Adam Levy Doubles Through Big Stack Erik Cajelais TWICE!

Erik Cajelais came in for a raise and Adam Levy reraised all in for ~20,000 more. Cajelais called and both players turned over their cards.

Levy got it in with the best hand and it held up. After the hand Levy doubled up to just over 45,000 while Cajelais took a small hit to his massive stack.

A short time later in the same level, Adam Levy doubled through Erik Cajelais once again, and this time Cajelais took a big hit to his stack. Cajelais raised to 3,200 before the flop and Levy reraised to 6,300. Cajelais called and the flop came 872. Levy moved all in and Cejalis snap-called.

Neither player had anything but a draw, Levy with ace-king high and Cajelais with the nut flush draw. The turn was the 3, no help and the river was the A. Both players made a pair of aces, Levy of course with the higher kicker. After waiting so patiently all night to pick the right spot, Levy found two of them and managed to double and then re-double through one of the chip leaders, putting himself on the leader board with 75,000 while Cajelais fell down to 85,000 after this hand.

Sean McCabe Busts Two, Climbs the Chip Ladder

With two players all in before the flop, Sean McCabe called with pocket jacks. Both of his opponents turned over their hands to reveal two more pocket pairs, aces and tens. The flop brought both a jack and a ten...how quickly aces can go from first to worst with the turn of a few cards. McCabe flopped top set and with two bricks on the turn and river he was able to knock out two opponents in the same hand and lock up the no. 2 spot on the leader board with 140,000 in chips.

Stuart Patterson got it all in from the small blind with AJ. Unfortunately for him, the player in the big blind woke up with AK and Patterson was eliminated when the board came all rags with a pair of sixes. The big blind's ace-king high held up and Patterson hit the rail.

Sean McCabe Continues to Run Good

Sean McCabe raised to 2,000 from under the gun and the player in seat 1 called from late position. The flop came 643, and McCabe bet 3,5000, seat 1 called. The turn was the J and both players checked. The river was the 10 and McCabe bet 6,000. Seat 1 went into the tank and seemed somewhat confused and frustrated by the way the hand went down. McCabe told his opponent, "If this was a cash game I would show you what I have, but here it's not allowed." Seat 1 shook his head and threw his hand away. McCabe raked the pot and brought his chip count to just over 70,000, securing one of the top spots on the leader board this round.

Mark Seif Eliminated

On a flop of K63, Mark Seif got it all in with top pair (AK) against an opponent's bottom set (33). All in with his tournament life on the line, Seif needed some help on the turn and river. Two deuces hit the board, filling his opponent and sending Seif home early on in Day 1.

Ryan Young Gets Doubled Through

Ryan Young raised to 1,600 from middle position and the player in seat 9 reraised all in for 5,500 more from the cutoff. Young slowed down for a minute before making the call.

Jason Sanders moved all in from under-the-gun for a total of 14,000 and the action folded to his opponent in the big blind.  The big blind took a peek at his hole cards and instantly called his Sanders’ bet.  His opponent turned over 77, and it was revealed to be yet another coin flip when Sanders turned over AQ.  The flop came KJ9, with no help for Sanders.  The 6 on the turn was another brick, and the 4 on the river was the final nail in the coffin.  Sanders exited the tournament area to collect his prize money.

Limp-Reraise a Successful Play for Vijayn Nagarajan

From under-the-gun, Vijayn Nagarajan limped into the pot and the action folded to a player in late position.  The player came in for a raise, and the action folded back to Nagarajan who reraised all in.  His opponent made the call and Nagarajan turned over AA, a strong favorite over his opponent’s KQ.  The flop came 1084.  The A on the turn gave Nagarajan a set of aces but also gave his opponent four outs to an inside straight.  The 8 on the river missed, and Nagarajan doubled up.

Khamar Xaythavone Doubles Up

Khamar Xaythavone moved all in for 33,400 from under-the-gun, and the action folded to his opponent on the button.  After counting his chips and deliberating, the button made the call and the other players folded.  Xaythavone revealed AQ, almost even money against his opponent’s 33.    Xaythavone spiked top two pair on the AQ9 flop, and the 6 turn and 8 river failed to improve his opponent’s hand.

New Chip Leader

A new chip leader has emerged in the last level and his name is Chad "lilholdem" Batista. Batista is now over $450,000 in chips and picked up a large chunk courtesy of Sean McCabe. McCabe raised from middle position and Batista smooth called from the button. The flop came king high and both players checked. The turn was a ten and McCabe bet out. Batista came back over the top all in and McCabe made the call. McCabe showed A-K for top pair and Batista flipped over A-A. The river bricked out for McCabe and he was sent to the rail. Batista picked up the nice pot and is currently the chip leader. Theo Tran and David Williams are still in the top five in chips as well.

Notable eliminations in the last round include Berry Johnston, Lee Watkinson, Scott Bohlman and Justin "Zeejustin" Bonomo.

Amnon Filippi has been able to consistently build his stack throughout the day and has had to do so with both J.C. Tran and Daniel Alaei at his table. Filippi raised to $12,000 from late postion and the action folded to the big blind. The player in the big blind thought for a moment and then pushed all in. Filippi thought for about five seconds and said "call", turning over K Q. The player in the big blind showed 10 5 and knew he was in trouble. The flop came J 9 4, leaving the player in the big blind with only one live card. The turn was the A and the river brought the K. Filippi eliminated his opponent and now has $305,000.

The field has been whittled down to just 48 players.

14 players have been eliminated within the last hour.  Harablos Voulgaris and Jon Friedberg busted early on, and Joe Hachem was one of three players elminated on the third hand dealt during hand-for-hand play.  Hachem pushed all in with pocket Queens and was called by Sean McCabe with A-10.  McCabe spiked an Ace on the flop, and Hachem's day was finished.

There are three significant players scoring cashes in this event.  Michael Binger held on for his 8th cash of the World Series, tying the all-time record.  One of the holders of that record, Phil Hellmuth, extended his all-time World Series cashes record.  Berry Johnston kept the pace with him, still second on the list.

David Williams, Theo Tran, and Jordan Morgan are still cruising at the top of the chip leaderboard.

Day One Paces

Day one of the $2,000 no-limit hold’em continued through its paces and a couple of familiar faces were lost. Johnny Chan and Eric Lynch both hit the rail, as did Shannon Elizabeth. Noah Boeken held the chip lead with over $3,000 and he was followed closely by Sean McCabe, Raymond Davis, and Justin Shronk at the top.

Familiar Face Patrol

Many familiar faces where stationed in the field, although they were far and few between due to the large number of participants in the event. Clonie Gowen, Eugene Todd, Ali Eslami, Tom McEvoy, J.J. Liu, Jared Hamby, Alan Sass, Nick Frangos, Alan Sass, David Pham, Amir Vahedi, James Mackey and Jim Worth were located in the back half of the room. While, in the front half of the room one could see Barry Greenstein, Humberto Brenes, Young Phan, Stu Paterson, David Singer, T.J. Cloutier, Isaac Haxton, Adam Baker, Joe Sebok, David Chiu, Rick Fuller, and Nick Binger.

McEvoy vs. McCabe

On a flop of J J 4 Tom McEvoy had moved all in for $2,700, and Sean McCabe was pondering his next move. McCabe eventually made the call and turned over A 4. McEvoy turned up A 2 and the turn and river brought the A 10. They chopped up the pot and McEvoy survived.

Fuller Doubled up his Opponent

On a flop of 10 6 3 Rick Fuller bet $1,400 and his opponent reraised all in. Fuller made the call and flipped over K Q. His opponent showed down J 10 and the turn and river brought the 8 J.

Antonius and Halling were all in after the flop. Antonius had pocket two's with a two on the flop and Halling had J 9 and was on a flush draw. The spade never came for Halling and Antonius' set held up.

All in before the flop, Caby was holding A 8 and Strasser showed K J. The board came 10 6 4 8 2 and Strasser was eliminated.

John "Tex" Barch defeated Joe Cassidy
Cassidy and Barch were almost even in chips after a see saw battle that appeared to be never ending. Barch raised to $4,000 preflop and Cassidy went into the tank. Cassidy pushed all in after thinking for several moments and Barch instantly made the call. Cassidy turned over A 10 and Barch flipped over A J. The board came J 9 6 10 7 and Cassidy stood up to leave the table. Barch called him back because after the chips were counted, Cassidy had Barch covered by $1,700. Cassidy immediately pushed all in on the next hand with 6 3 and Barch called with A 9. The dealer laid out Q Q 3 2 A and Joe Cassidy was eliminated.

De Wolfe out foxes Jacob
Roland De Wolfe finally vanquished Alex Jacob in his match which lasted just over two hours. Towards the end De Wolfe forced Jacob all-in twice in quick succession from his position as dominant stack.

Both times Jacob doubled up – once with AJ Vs K3 and again with A3 Vs A2

However, the third time he was an overwhelming underdog, his K-6 offsuit against De Wolfe’s A-K offsuit and a dry board brought no help for a dejected looking Jacob and De Wolfe advances to round three.

The $5,000 World Championship of Heads Up No-Limit has experienced some delays getting underway.  The event was supposed to get underway at noon, but the seat assignment draw did not even begin until 12:45 and is still going at 1:45.   120 players received a first round bye, including big names like Doyle Brunson, Jamie Gold, Barry Greenstein, Bill Edler, and Tony G.  Players have been milling around the hallways and aisles of the Rio, waiting for play to get underway.  Many have expressed frustration with the delays and the surprising amount of first round byes.  Play will probably get underway sometime between 2 and 3 p.m., so make sure to check back for first round match-ups and the Pro Blogs of Phil Laak, Nam Le, Sean McCabe and Shawn Sheikhan here at Cardplayer.com.

Heads Up To Get Back Underway

The final 64 players are set and ready to go in the Heads Up World Championship.  A large tournament bracket, has been placed on a dry erase board in the corner of the tournament area.  This suggests that the field and possible match ups are now set, so players can look forward to their future opponents as the tournament progressses.  The tables are set up again with the two dealers on either end of each table to minimize the number of tables used.

Sean McCabe, Shannon Shorr, and Scotty Nguyen are still alive in our Pro Blogs, and we will continue to follow their path through the tournament field.

Cassidy pushed all in after thinking for several moments and Barch instantly made the call. Cassidy turned over A 10 and Barch flipped over A J. The board came J 9 6 10 7 and Cassidy stood up to leave the table. Barch called him back because after the chips were counted, Cassidy had Barch covered by $1,700. Cassidy immediately pushed all in on the next hand with 6 3 and Barch called with A 9. The dealer laid out Q Q 3 2 A and Joe Cassidy was eliminated.

De Wolfe out foxes Jacob
Roland De Wolfe finally vanquished Alex Jacob in his match which lasted just over two hours. Towards the end De Wolfe forced Jacob all-in twice in quick succession from his position as dominant stack.

Both times Jacob doubled up – once with AJ Vs K3 and again with A3 Vs A2

However, the third time he was an overwhelming underdog, his K-6 offsuit against De Wolfe’s A-K offsuit and a dry board brought no help for a dejected looking Jacob and De Wolfe advances to round three.

 John Kabbaj, Rob Hollink, Jani Sointula, and Noah Boeken all won their games while Ram Vaswani was beaten.

Delays

The $5,000 World Championship of Heads Up No-Limit has experienced some delays getting underway.  The event was supposed to get underway at noon, but the seat assignment draw did not even begin until 12:45 and is still going at 1:45.   120 players received a first round bye, including big names like Doyle Brunson, Jamie Gold, Barry Greenstein, Bill Edler, and Tony G.  Players have been milling around the hallways and aisles of the Rio, waiting for play to get underway.  Many have expressed frustration with the delays and the surprising amount of first round byes.  Play will probably get underway sometime between 2 and 3 p.m., so make sure to check back for first round match-ups and the Pro Blogs of Phil Laak, Nam Le, Sean McCabe and Shawn Sheikhan here at Cardplayer.com.

Heads Up To Get Back Underway

The final 64 players are set and ready to go in the Heads Up World Championship.  A large tournament bracket, has been placed on a dry erase board in the corner of the tournament area.  This suggests that the field and possible match ups are now set, so players can look forward to their future opponents as the tournament progressses.  The tables are set up again with the two dealers on either end of each table to minimize the number of tables used.

Sean McCabe, Shannon Shorr, and Scotty Nguyen are still alive in our Pro Blogs, and we will continue to follow their path through the tournament field.

Sean McCabe raises to $1,600 from early position and Toto Leonidas and seat 10 call.  The flop comes A108, McCabe bets $2,000, Leonidas calls and seat 10 folds.  The turn is the J and McCabe checks.  Leonidas bets $4,000 and McCabe moves all in.  Leonidas insta-calls with KQ but is behind McCabe's 98.  The turn is the 7, and Leonidas starts celebrating his nut flush.  It is not until McCabe yells, "Straight flush!" that Leonidas realizes his hand is second best.  McCabe drags the pot and now has $62,500 in chips.

Matthew Graham bets $2,700 from middle position and and Sean McCabe calls from the cutoff. Eugene Todd also calls from the button and the flop comes J75 and Graham checks. Mcacabe also checks and Todd fires out $7,000. Graham reraises to $18,000 and McCabe folds. Todd goes into the tank for a few minutes, but folds. Graham has $148,000 after the hand.

After getting beat up the last few hands, Sean McCabe limps in middle position with QJ and the player in seat six raises to $3,200.  McCabe makes the call and the flop comes Q1010.   McCabe checks and seat six asks for a count of McCabe's chips which come to $23,600.  Seat six then bets $20,600.  McCabe goes into the tank, decides that his opponent doesn't want a call, and pushes his remaining chips.  Seat six calls the $3,000 more and tables 44.  McCabe fades dodges a 4 when the board comes 97, and he doubles up to over $48,000.
