Doyle Brunson Accumulates Big StackJul 10, '13 He said he wasn’t going to play any tournaments this summer due to his 79 years of age and low energy level, but 10-time World Series of Poker champ Doyle Brunson decided to enter the main event and after his second day of play on Tuesday sat with one of the largest stacks remaining. A total of 6,352 entered the event, and it’s unclear exactly how many were left as of early Wednesday morning local time in Las Vegas. Brunson ended the day with 224,000, which puts him well within the top 100 stacks. The highlight of his day was a pretty standard hand. An opponent with a lot of chips got aggressive with A-K suited only to run into Brunson’s pocket aces. He slowly chipped up after that hand, adding about another 90,000 to his stack. He Tweeted shortly before play ended: “I feel like a truck ran over me.” Other big stacks at the end of play included Jason DeWitt (382,900), Steve Gee (300,600), Kenny Tran (299,000), Greg Merson (275,600), David Benefield (261,100) and Anthony Gregg (254,000). Merson and Gee both made the final table last year. Everyone is trailing Nick Schwarmann, who ended the day with 413,600. Schwarmann, from Longwood, Florida, made a final table earlier this summer. Notable eliminations on the day included Dan Smith, Jake Balsiger, Cody Slaubaugh, Vicky Coren, Dan Fleyshman, Mike Sowers, Mike Sexton, Barry Greenstein, Terrence Chan, John Henningan, Kristen Bicknell, Faraz Jaka, Ram Vaswani, Amanda Musumeci, Matt Salsberg and Chris Moneymaker, who won the event a decade ago and started the poker boom. The remaining players from Day 1C will take their seats on Day 2C at noon local time on Wednesday. On Thursday, all the surviving players will in action at the same time, as Day 3 is usually when things get interesting and it becomes clear who some of the contenders could be. The event is scheduled to run for a total of 10 days. Everyone is gunning for a first-place prize of about $8.3 million. The poker legend, winner of 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, including two main event titles, ended Day 3 of the 2013 main event on Thursday with an unofficial stack of 626,000, which put him well within the top 50 with 666 left in the game’s most prestigious tournament. Brunson Tweeted that he left 15 minutes before play ended to get some sleep. He originally said he wasn’t going to play any tournaments this year due to a lack of energy. Notable eliminations from the day include Liv Boeree, Phil Hellmuth, Jeff Shulman, Glen Chorny, Jason DeWitt, Darren Elias, Christina Lindley, Freddy Deeb, Kenny Tran, Dan O’Brien, Jonathan Aguiar, Tom McEvoy, Kevin MacPhee, Haralabos Voulgaris, Randy Ohel, Philipp Gruissem, Erika Sands Moutinho, Dan Cates, Phil Ivey, Tony Gregg, Andy Frankenberger, David Benyamine, Johnny Chan, Tony Dunst, Jeremy Ausmus, Barry Shulman, Tony Cousineau, Jason Senti, Elio Fox, Scott Seiver, Jean-Robert Bellande, Robert Mizrachi, Amanda Baker, Allen Kessler and Elisabeth Hille. Bellande was one of the chip leaders entering the day, but lost a big pot when his A-K was beat by K-10, and then became short when his pocket kings ran into pocket aces. Ivey was the victim of arguably the biggest cooler of the tournament so far. He had a ton of chips and flopped a set of threes, but lost to Max Steinberg who flopped a set of tens. Steinberg used the hand to end the day with 987,500, good for a top-five stack. Other notables with huge stacks include Bryan Pellegrino (752,000), Kyle Julius (751,000), Tuan Lee (630,000), Luke Schwartz (620,500), Annette Obrestad (564,000), Russell Thomas (562,000), Jon Turner (558,000), Jonathan Jaffe (555,000) and Melanie Weisner (536,000). Defending champ Greg Merson ended Day 3 with 390,500. Everyone is chasing Maxx Coleman, who ended the day with 1,071,500. The money bubble would burst sometime Friday during Day 4. Level One, Hour One: Emmitt Smith ConfusedJul 08, '10 Blinds: 50-100 Average Chip Count: 30,000 Notable Chip Counts: 1. Antoine Saout — 36,100 Card Player Family Chip Counts Jeff Shulman — 30,000 Notable Eliminations: None Notables in Play Steven Paul Player Twitter Accounts Phil Ivey Big Hands: Happy Takes Early Hit Entering the action late, Jeff Shulman bet 2,000 on a board of JK379 and when his opponent called Shulman quickly tapped the table and slid his cards into the muck. His opponent started to do the same, and Shulman reminded the dealer that the best hand is still supposed to be shown. The other player flashed a king, which was good enough. How To Blow $10,000 In Five Minutes “All in and a call!” Those were the words uttered just five minutes into the level as a player moved all in (for 300 big blinds) with AQ on a K108. He was called by a player holding KK for top set. The board finished off 6 and 3 and the first Day 1D casualty made his way to the exits four hands into play. Singer Gets One On the Turn Emmitt Smith Loses a Pot Emmitt Smith and an opponent were tangled up in a flop of 1094. Smith checked and his opponent bet 500. Smith called. The Q fell on the turn and Smith checked. His opponent bet 2,000. Smith check-raised to 4,000 and his opponent called. The Q on the river prompted a check from Smith. His opponent checked behind and Smith announced that he had a straight. However, he tabled the K10 for just tens and queens. His opponent exposed the straight with the KJ and took the pot. Smith fell to 25,000 as a result of the hand. Left in the Deck A Tough Table John Juanda will need a first or second-place finish in the main event to catch Frank Kassela in the player of the year race. That would be a hard task regardless, but add the fact that he is seated right next to David Benyamine and the odds are even more difficult. A Reunion 2005 main event runner-up Steve Dannenmann has shown up and is in the field today. Interestingly enough, despite a massive field he is seated at the table right next to the table featuring the man who beat him that year, Joe Hachem. Featured Today The ESPN main stage is currently occupied by 2009 main event runner-up Darvin Moon. He has been hard to spot at this year’s WSOP but he is getting the bulk of the camera time today. On the outer ESPN stage is the Godfather himself, Doyle Brunson. At one of the outer feature tables is Vanessa Rousso, so these players should get plenty of airtime once the WSOP telecast rolls around. Player Tags: Jeff Shulman, John Juanda, Doyle Brunson, David Singer, Vanessa Rousso, Darvin Moon Level Eight Hour Two Update: Doyle Has Left The BuildingJul 10, '10 Blinds: 400-800 with a 100 ante Players Remaining: 1,359 out of 7,319 Chip Counts: 1. Gabriel Walls – 410,000 Card Player Chip Counts: Josh Brikis — 162,000 Notable Eliminations: Ludovic Lacay Big Hands: Chris Ferguson Doubles Up Chris Ferguson looked down at the QQ with a raise and call in front of him. He had just 16,000 in his stack and decided to move all in. The initial bettor called with the 44 and the other opponent folded. The board ran out 9109J2 and Ferguson doubled to 41,000. Ludovic Lacay Eliminated Ludovic Lacay was short and move all in with the A9 and was called by the AJ of an opponent. The board ran out A6677 and Lacay was gone. Jon Friedberg Wins a Flip Jon Friedberg had player with a short stack all in preflop. Friedberg exposed the AJ while his opponent tabled the 88. The board ran out 1033J6 and Friedberg won the hand. He was at 72,000 after the hand. Sands Doesn’t Fear Overcards We caught up with this hand on the river with the board reading 6A368 and David Sands was facing a river bet of 8,500 into a pot of about 14,000. Sands tossed his hand back and forth as he counted out the chips to make the call and tried talking out what his opponent could have. Eventually Sands made the call and his opponent nodded his head and acknowledged the good call. He was reluctant to turn his hand up, but eventually showed 910. Sands turned up QQ and took the pot to climb to 210,000. Doyle Brunson Eliminated Every ESPN employee in the amazon room rushed over to the table in the orange section to see Doyle Brunson all-in and behind. On a flop of 843, Brunson got all his chips in the middle of the table with 77 and his opponent tabled JJ. The turn was the 4, leaving Brunson with one of the two remaining sevens in the deck to take the pot and stay alive. The river wasn’t favorable to Brunson, as the dealer peeled off the 6 to eliminate Brunson from the tournament. Brunson got a round of applause from entire room on his way out. Brunson’s series is over, and he is happy it is since Brunson did not have a single cash all summer. Galfond’s Ace-High Good With the board showing 8582K Phil Galfond checked to seat 4 who bet 10,000. Galfond went deep into the tank, thinking over the possibilities. He finally made the call and showed just A3. His opponent mucked, and the very nice call gave Galfond 173,000 in chips. Cantu Crippled After multiple raises preflop, Brandon Cantu and two other players saw a flop of 594. All players checked the flop and saw the 7 fall on the turn. There was a bet of 9,500 and Cantu called. After the 8 came on the river, Cantu faced a bet of 28,500. Cantu made the call and wasn’t happy with the results when he saw the 66, giving his opponent a straight flush and the pot. Cantu is now down to just 10,000 in chips.
