Thang Luu of Las Vegas made his first World Series of Poker cash in the 2005 casino employee no-limit hold'em event, wherein he placed third. In 2007, Luu came in runner-up in the $2,000 buy-in Omaha eight-or-better event.
Tired of just coming close, Luu took down the 2008 $1,500 buy-in Omaha eight-or-better event for his first gold bracelet and the more than $243,000 first-place prize.
In 2009, Luu repeated the feat and once again won the gold bracelet in the $1,500 buy-in Omaha eight-or-better event, this time he took home $263,135 against a field of 918 players (the largest live Omaha eight-or-better tournament in history at the time). Luu also became the first player to win back-to-back bracelets in open buy-in events at the WSOP since Johnny Chan won the main event in 1987 and 1988.
