Brandon Schaefer entered heads-up play dead even in chips with Jonathan Cohen and managed to take a 2:1 chip lead heading to the dinner break. Schaefer came back from the break with momentum and slowly chopped away at his opponent until he had him out chipped by nearly 3:1. Cohen had 45 big blinds going into the final hand and got it all in good on the turn, but Schafer caught a straight on the river to win his first WSOP gold bracelet.
Jonathan Cohen raised the button to 90,000 and Brandon Schafer called from the big blind.
The flop came Q96, Schafer checked, Cohen bet 105,000 and Schafer called.
The turn was the 2, Schafer checked, Cohen bet 230,000, Schafer shoved and Cohen called all in for about 1,800,000.
Cohen was all in for his tournament life and ahead on the turn with QJ for top pair against Schaefer’s 87 for an opened-ended straight draw.
The river was the 5, giving Schafer a straight to win the pot and eliminate Jonathan Cohen in 2nd place ($192,559). Brandon Schafer wins Event no. 14, taking home the $311,174 grand prize and the fourteenth gold bracelet of the 2012 WSOP.

Adam Kagin entered the level on the short stack with 37 big binds, and was the next player eliminated after getting it all in before the flop with a pocket pair against two over cards.
Brandon Schaefer opened the button for 55,000, Adam Kagin reraised to 200,000 from the small blind, Schafer shoved and Kagin called all in.
Kagin was all in for his tournament life and was ahead before the flop with 88 against Schaefer’s A10.
The board came 653A10, giving Schaefer top pair on the turn and two pair on the river to win the pot and eliminate Adam Kagin in 3rd Place ($120,329).

Action Begins, Final Table Now Underway

The final table of Event no. 14 ($1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout) is now underway, and Card Player will be posting level-by-level updates with all of the action, current chip counts, and prize distributions.
The Shootout tournament features a different format than a traditional No-Limit Hold’em event in that players must win their table before moving on. As players win their individual tables, they take those chips with them to the next round where they must win another table and so on, until the final table is reached. Day 3 began with 12 players spread out over 2 tables, and with the elimination of Dylan Hortin in 10th Place ($17,544), the official 9-handed final table is now set. Play will begin in Level 2 with blinds of 4,000-8,000 with a 1,000 ante, and will continue until a winner is determined.
