Level 9 Update: Tran Keeps Rolling
May 31, '09
Blinds: 300-600 with 75 ante
Players Remaining: 530 out of 3,012
Notable Eliminations:
Jimmy Fricke
Big Hands:
Legend Killer
The player in seat 8 raised to 1,800 from early position and Tommy Le was the only caller from the small blind. The flop dropped KQ6 and both players checked. The turn was the 5 and the fireworks began. Seat 8 fired 2,300 after Le checked. Le then raised it to 6,000 straight, which was immediately followed by an all in bet by seat 8 for 3,500 more. Le was disgusted, but was priced in to call and tabled AK. His opponent revealed the superior KK for a set of cowboys. The river was the 3 and the Legend took a huge hit to his stack as he was down to just under 7,000 in chips.
Lee Gets Out of the Way
The player in seat 4 called 800 from middle position, Lee Watkinson called from the small blind and the big blind checked his option. The flop came 773 and seat 4 fired 2,200. Watkinson quickly mucked, as did the big blind. Watkinson was at 16,500 after that hand.
Tran Forced Out of One Pot, K.O.’s A Player in Another
The player in seat 4 raised to 1,600 from early position and action folded around to J.C. Tran on the button. He made the call and the two players saw a flop of K7Q. Seat 4 led out with 2,500 and Tran got out of the way.
Later, Tran called an opponent’s all in and showed pocket nines. His opponent tabled big slick, AK. The board offered no help and Tran knocked out another player, increasing his huge stack to over 60,000.
Don’t Flush!
The player in seat 9 raised to 2,500 on a flop of J42. Monnette made the call and then the player in seat 5 came over the top, going all in for 10,375. Seat 9 mucked and Monnette made the call, showing K8 for the second nut flush draw. Unfortunately, his opponent had A for the nut flush draw. Monnette needed help and he got it when the 8 fell on the turn. The river was the 7, giving Monnette the huge pot and building his stack to roughly 73,000.

Level 8 Update: Brown Busts, Tran On a Roll
May 31, '09
Blinds: 200-400 with a 50 ante
Players Remaining: 660 out of 3,012
Notable Eliminations:
Chad Brown
Big Hands:
Chad Brown Busts
Chad Brown moved his short stack of 1,650 into the middle from the button and the small blind made the call. Brown showed J8 and his opponent tabled A4. The board ran out 1062K2 and Brown failed to improve and was eliminated.
Do You See The Legend?
Tommy “Legend” Le raised to 1,100 from the button and the player in the big blind made the call. The flop came A62 and both players checked. The turn brought the A and the big blind fired 2,600 at the Legend. It was too much for Le as he mucked, dropping his stack to 24,000.
J.C. Tran Knocks Another Out
Tran raised to 1,100 from the cutoff and the button immediately pushed all in for 6,000 more. Action folded back to Tran who made the call and both players showed their cards:
Tran: AQ
Button: QQ
Board: K86K10
Tran nailed the flush on the river and busted his opponent, improving his stack to over 50,000.
Left In The Deck:
The players at J.C. Tran’s table can’t wait for the table to be broken. Why? Because that is the only way they can get away from the man torturing their stacks. “When are you leaving?” one player asked Tran. “When they break the table,” Tran replied with a laugh. “Don’t draw a table with me,” he said earlier after busting an opponent. “I’m running too hot.”

The Flack and Esfandiari Show
Over at table 43 in the Brasilia Room, Layne Flack and Antonio Esfandiari are sitting right next to each other. The two were already very chatty with no one watching, but once the cameras arrived, the show began.
With Esfandiari in the big blind, Flack mucked his hand from under the gun. "If that hand flips over," Flack began. "Everything I've worked for with my reputation will go 'pffft'," he said as he signaled a thumbs down for the camera. Meanwhile, the player in seat 9 saw fit to raise Esfandiari's blind as he threw out 1,100 from the button. The small blind folded and "The Magician" repopped to 3,500. "Antonio is here to let you know that we do the raising around here," said Flack. Seat 9 caught the message and mucked his hand. This set up a very interesting battle on the next hand.
Action folded around to Esfandiari in the small blind and he raised to 1,000 straight. Layne Flack made the call from the big blind and the two players were heads up going to the flop. It came down A55. Esfandiari checked and Flack fired 1,000. After a call from Esfandiari, the turn came down with the Q. Esfandiari checked again and Flack bet 1,500. Esfandiari made another called and checked the river as the 9 fell. "Things are about to get ugly, dad!" Flack said into the camera before the river came. He then bet 4,000 and Esfandiari mucked. "I had it," Flack told "The Magician." Flack was at around 44,000.
Spinoff for Antonio
Esfandiari separated himself from Flack on the next hand as the player in seat 8 raised to 800. Esfandiari called from the button and Flack folded his small blind. The flop came down KQ7. Seat 8 fired a continuation bet of 1,200. "The Magician" went nowhere as he made the call and both players saw the 9 come on the turn. Seat 8 slowed down, checking to Esfandiari. He fired 3,300 into the pot and seat 8 disappeared from the hand. Esfandiari raked in the pot and he was around 80,000 in chips.
And Now, Back to Flack
Table 43 was then broken and both player were moved to different tables. But the two players were still within earshot of each other as Flack got involved in a hand.
Action folded around to the small blind who raised to 1,100 and Flack defended from the big blind. The flop K103 and both players checked. The turn was the 10, pairing the board. The small blind then fired 2,000 into the pot. Flack called and the river was the 5. The small blind checked the third heart to Flack and he fired 6,000 into the middle. The small blind said, "Do you have the flush?" as he made the call. Flack shook his head and threw his hand into the muck. The small blind showed A10 and he raked the pot.
Hevad Khan Picks Off a Huge Bluff
Khan raised to 800 from the cutoff and the player in seat 4 made the call from the big blind. The flop came 1043 and the big blind checked to Khan. He fired 1,200 into the pot and the big blind check-raised to 2,800 total. Khan made a quick call and the A hit on the turn. The big blind fired 5,800 at the pot and sent Khan into the tank. He asked his opponent how many chips he had left (12,600). Khan then made the call after a few more moments of thought. The river was the J and the big blind actually tanked for three minutes on his own action before finally deciding check. Khan checked behind his opponent and the big blind mucked his hand. There was a debate at the table on whether Khan needed to show his hand. He eventually did, showing Q10 for middle pair. He raked the pot and his stack was at 46,000 after the hand.
Ryan Young With a Shout Out
Three-handed and on a flop of 852, Phil Gordon bet 1,700 and the player in seat 2 raised 4,500. Ryan Young then repopped to 11,000 total. Gordon mucked and seat 2 did as well after tanking for a few moments. Young looked up and said, "This is for Card Player," as he showed Q8 for top pair.
Jesus Walks... Out
On a board reading AQ73, action was checked to Chris Ferguson. He fired 2,000 and one player called. The big blind folded and the river was the 6. Ferguson pushed his last 3,000 into the middle and his opponent quickly called. Ferguson turned over 77 for a flopped set of sevens. They weren't so lucky, though, as his opponent showed K6 for the nut flush on the flop. Ferguson stood up and made his exit from the main event.
The Legend Continues
Over at table 7 in the Brasilia Room, Tommy "Legend" Le eliminated one of his opponents as Le had a set of threes. It was good news and bad news for "Legend" as he brought his stack to 50,000 but he also saw the empty seat filled by Shane "Shaniac" Schleger.
With Allen and Leroy already eliminated today and Nam busting yesterday, Tommy "Legend" is the last of the Le brothers left in the 2008 WSOP main event.
Todd Brunson Shoots Down A Couple Of Cowboys
Preflop, an unfortunate opponent raised to 1,000, only to have Todd Brunson min raise behind him to a total of 2,000. The player then made the fourth bet, making it 5,000. Brunson ended the baby raising by making a man-sized shove all in for over 12,000. The player made the call, showing KK. He was crushed by Brunson's AA, which improved to a set by the river, the board running out Q52AJ. The player was eliminated, and Brunson was up to 26,000 after the hand.
Shulman Takes Pot Without Showdown
Jeff Shulman raised to 900 from the button and was called by the player in the big blind. On a flop of J52, the big blind checked to Shulman, who bet 1,700. The big blind made the call and the Q fell on the turn. Both players checked, but when the 2 fell on the river the big blind bet 2,000. Shulman wasted little time raised to 4,500, sending the big blind into the tank. He eventually folded and Shulman took a pot containing around 5,000 in chips without showing down, boosting his stack to around 34,000.
Minieri Makes Big Laydown
Action was limped to Dario Minieri, who raised to 1,400 from middle position. Seat 6 and seat 4 called and action was checked to Minieri on a flop of AQ5. He bet 2,900 and only seat 6 called. The 7 came on the turn and Minieri slowed down, checking to seat 6 who bet 5,000. Minieri thought and said he put his opponent on A-Q. "That's the sickest fold of my life," Minieri said as he laid his hand down. His opponent didn't respond as he scooped the pot. Minieri said he folded A-K.
Sick Bluff From The Italian
Mid-way through the level Minieri was in a hand where his opponent bet 1,500 on the flop of AQ7. Minieri raised to 3,600 and his opponent called. The Js fell on the turn and Minieri moved all in. A camera crew swarmed the table as Minieri's opponent thought over his decision. The player eventually mucked and Minieri showed 25 for a huge bluff. After the hand Minieri sat with 19,000 in chips.
Micon Bets Out One Opponent, Eliminates Another
With the player in seat 9 all in and seat 4 also in the hand, Bryan Micon thought for a minute before re-popping it to 3,350. Seat 4 thought then mucked JJ face up. It was a good laydown as Micon showed AA and was against the all in seat 9's 99. The flop brought QJ5, which would've given seat 4 a set if he had stayed in the hand. The turn was the 4, giving seat 9 a flush draw and more outs. But the 10 hit on the river and Micon eliminated a player and added to his chip stack.

Levy: KK
UTG: QQ
Big Blind: JJ
Board: K108A7
Levy got it all in with the best hand and flopped top set. The turn was a scare card for Levy, a queen or a jack on the river would give either of his opponents a straight, but Levy managed to dodge some paint as he tripled up that hand, eliminating one player and crippling the other as he brought his chip stack up to 185,000.
I Am Legend
Tommy "Legend" Le raised to 4,200 preflop from the button. Seat 5 called, as did seat 2 from the cutoff. The flop came A85 and action was checked to Le. He fired 6,000 into the pot and only the player in the cutoff made the call. The turn was the 6 and seat 2 checked to Le. The man known as "Legend" bet enough to put seat 2 all in. After much thought, seat 2 gave up his hand and Le showed A2 for top pair. He took the pot and was around 128,000.
Ramdin Takes a Pot
Victor Ramdin raised to 3,500 preflop from the cutoff and the player in seat 9 called from the big blind. The flop came 943 and seat 9 took a stab at the pot, firing 4,000. Ramdin would have none of that nonsense as he raised to 16,000. Seat 9 got the message and threw his hand in the muck. Ramdin took the pot and he was around 325,000
Grospellier Takes a Hit
Bertrand "ElKy" Grospellier bet enough to put "Hollywood" Dave Stann all in. Stann made the call and turned over AJ. Grospellier showed a dominated KJ and he needed help. The flop offered none as it came down Q43. The turn brough the 10, opening up straight possibilities for Grospellier, but he needed a non-diamond ace or nine to eliminate Stann. But the river brought the 2 and Grospellier took a hit, dropping his stack to 90,000.
Kim Taken For a Ride On Broadway
The player in seat 7 limped in from the button, David Kim completed the bet from the small blind and the player in seat 9 checked his option from the big blind. The flop came down AQJ and Kim fired 2,600. The big blind got out of the way but seat 7 hung around. The turn was the 3 and Kim checked. Seat 7 bet out 5,000 and Kim made the call. The river brought the 2 and Kim checked again. Seat 7 fired 10,000 and Kim made the call after a few moments of thought. Seat 7 turned over K10 for a flopped broadway straight. Kim showed down A2 for top pair and saw his stack go down to 110,000.
Daut Dodges A Big One
On a board of K6J, the player in seat 7 fired 3,500 and Ryan Daut raised to 9,500. Seat 7 made the call and the 6 came on the turn. Both players checked and the 7 fell on the river. Seat 7 fired 15,000 and Daut took a massive tank session. He took almost seven minutes before he finally mucked his hand. Seat 7 then showed JJ for a full house. Daut was down to 45,000 but things could have been much worse.

"Mikey! Mikey! Mikey!" Chants Fill The Area, Matusow Doubles
Facing a raise to 75,000 from Sean Davis, Mike Matusow pushed all in for 545,000. Action folded back to Davis who made the call. Matusow showed 105 and said, "I found the ten-five, ladies and gentleman." Davis showed AK and was the favorite in the hand, but certainly not among the railbirds. The flop brought J75, giving Matusow a pair to take the lead. "Mikey! Mikey! Mikey!" chants filled the area as the 8 hit on the turn. They continued as the 6 hit on the river, giving Matusow the pot to double up to around 1,100,000 in chips.
Shortly after the big hand, Phil Hellmuth joined Matusow at the feature table. Can't wait for that ESPN broadcast.
Gould Climbs Leaderboard, Taylor Gone in 91st Place ($51,467)
Tim Taylor raised to 60,000 from late position, only to have Alan Gould reraise to 210,000 from the big blind. Taylor moved all in for 731,000 and Gould made the call. Taylor showed a big hand AK but was in a race situation against Gould's big hand - QQ. The flop came KQ5, pairing Taylor but giving Gould top set. Taylor needed running cards to win the hand but the 9 turn left him drawing dead, and the 5 hit on the river. Taylor was eliminated and Gould chipped up to around 2,300,000.
Kostritsyn Rivered, Takes Big Hit
Moscow's Alexander Kostritsyn, winner of the 2008 Aussie Millions, bet 250,000 when action was checked to him on a board of A629. Judet Cristian check-raised to 575,000 and Kostritsyn moved all in for 906,000. Cristian called and showed A9 for top two pair and the flush draw. Kostritsyn showed 22 for a set of deuces and was in the lead. But the 8 on the river gave Cristian the flush and the pot. Kostritsyn dropped to 820,000 after the hand, while Cristian doubled to nearly 3,000,000.
Kunbuz Flops Set, Busts Papola in 90th Place ($64,333)
After reraising Jamal Kunbuz preflop, Jeffrey Papola moved all in on a flop of KQ3 and was called by Kunbuz. Papola showed JJ but was in bad shape against Kunbuz's QQ, giving him a flopped set. The turn brought the A, making Papola's only out a 10 for a straight. But the 4 completed the board and Papola was eliminated. Kunbuz had around 3,700,000 after the hand.
Legendary
On a board of Q93, Jason Riesenberg fired a bet of 60,000 and Tommy "Legend" Le fired 120,000 and Riesenberg agonized his move. "I fold you show me?" Riesenberg asked. "Legend" agreed to the terms and Riesenberg announced that he was folding. "Legend" then showed QJ and Riesenberg lost it. "God%*#@ it!" Riesenberg shouted as he turned over his dead AQ. "Legend" took the pot and was around 1 million in chips.
Ketteringham Busts Barbero, Takes Chip Lead
Jose Barbero moved all in preflop and Mark Ketteringham made the call. Barbero was racing with his AQ against Ketteringham's 99. Barbero took the lead when the flop came A4K. The turn brought the 5 and Barbero was one card away from doubling up. Instead, the 9 showed up on the river to spoil Barbero's double up party as it gave Ketteringham a set and sent Barbero to the rail. Ketteringham took the chip lead as he stood with a little over 5 million in chips.

Big Hands:
"Mikey!

Big Hands:
Medic Sent to the Rail
Nenad Medic moved all in for 1,525 total before the flop. The player in seat 7 made the call and Medic showed down A10. He was in bad shape against his opponent's JJ. The flop of K39 was the wrong color for Medic as his flush possibilities were gone. The turn offered some help with the 10. But the river was the 5 and Medic was sent packing.
Lady in the River
A raise to 600 before the flop was called by Hevad Khan and Mark Seif. All of a sudden, seat 6 popped it to 1,400 total. Khan mucked his hand, but Seif decided to jump in and test the waters. The flop came J95. Seif checked and his opponent announced "all in." Seif quickly called and turned over 109 for second pair. He was ahead of his opponent's open ended straight draw with 108. The turn was a harmless 4, but the river drowned Seif as the Q made its presence known. Seif was down to around 6,000 in chips after the hand.
Don't Push Me
Preflop, Paul Wasicka raised to 625 total. The action folded around to the player in seat 5, who reraised to 1,300. Not to be outdone, Wasicka came over the top of that raise and made it 6,400 to go. His opponent tapped his cards on the table and mucked. Wasicka took the pot and was near the top of the leaderboard with 17,900 in chips.
The Brothers Le With Jesus Watching Over Them
Nam Le and his brother Tommy Le have been playing at table 42, along with Chris "Jesus" Ferguson. Ferguson was in seat 2 with around 10,000 in chips while Nam was at 4,700 and Tommy was sititng with 4,000. But Tommy went through a series of hands that saw him go to the brink of elimination.
On a board showing A875, the player in seat 7 bet 2,000. Le went into the tank and finally called. He checked dark and the river was the 9. Seat 7 went all in for 1,500 almost at the same moment the card hit the felt. Le folded and his opponent showed A3. His stack after the hand was at 3,050 but would go as low as 400 before he got some relief.
In the big blind, Le put the rest of his short stack into the pot and received two callers. Le woke up with 77. Seat 6 showed down 33 and seat 3 showed A8. The board ran out J26K2 and Le's pair held up. He tripled up to 1,300.

Bryan Devonshire vs. Tommy Le
Apr 23, '08
With the board showing 10775 on the turn, Tommy Le bets 150,000 from the big blind, and Bryan Devonshire moves all in from the button.
Their chip stacks are close, but Devonshire has more chips.
Tommy Le says, "Alright, let me think about this one." He studies the board and Devonshire for about five minutes, agonizing over his decision. Devonshire says nothing, and is pretty motionless.
Eventually, someone calls a clock, and Tommy Le lets the count get all the way to zero, giving him a dead hand. He mucks, and Devonshire carefully rechecks his cards before showing just one -- the A.
(FYI, we do know the preflop action. Devonshire raised from the button to 44,000, and Tommy Le called from the big blind.)
Devonshire takes the pot, building his stack to about 1.06 million, while Tommy Le drops down to 470,000.

Tommy "Legend" Makes a Tough Fold
Apr 23, '08
Tommy Le and David Kim were involved in a pot that lasted into the break after Kim moved all in on a flop of 972. Le tanks for several minutes before he says, "I want to see how many chips I have...how many chips I can donk off here."
Le counts off his chips and decides to make an agonizing fold. He tells Kim that he is going to fold his hand and says, "I am going to show you my hand, you don't have to show me yours, but I would appreciate it." Le shows 95 for top pair and throws it into the muck as Kim opts not to show his hand and rake the pot.
