The players started the hour on a 15 minute break, and when they returned it was to play some more stud.

The official number of entrants was released, and the 148 players had created a prize pool of $7,104,000. The first-place finisher will take home $2,276,832.

Two Kings

Mike Sexton bets $1,600 on fifth street with two kings exposed and T.J. Cloutier made the call. Cloutier then asked, “You only have two kings Mike?” Cloutier then called down Sexton’s bets on sixth and seventh street. Cloutier then turned up 4 4 (5 10 4 9) 6.

Blue Moon

Six players to a flop in seven card stud is rare, four players remaining at the end of the hand happens once in a blue moon. That was what happened when “Captain” Tom Franklin turned over a flush on the end of a hand with Maureen Feduniak, Jerrod Ankenman, and a player in seat one. The three players mucked and Franklin took down the hefty pot.

Quick Hits

Near the end of the hour Tim Phan and Max Pescatori tangled on a pot to the river, but Pescatori mucked when Phan flipped up jacks and fives. Rafi Amit also took a hit when his opponent turned up three of a kind threes.

An Emotional Level

The ladies event started with some big names in the field including pros Vanessa Rousso, Isabelle Mercier, Maureen Feduniak, Evelyn Ng, Kathy Liebert, Mary Jones, Karina Jett, Jennifer Tilly, J. J. Liu, Jennifer "Jennicide" Leigh, Clonie Gowen, Patty G., Marsha Waggoner, Erica Schoenberg and Susie Isaacs.  Hollywood was well represented with celebrities Shannon Elizabeth and Cheryl Hines.  Also playing in today's event is Shirley Williams, the mother of professional David Williams, final table participant Vanessa Selbst, 2006 ladies event final table participant Devi Ortega, Nikki LeTran and Marlis Sawicki.  Even some of the media has joined in to participate including Amanda Leatherman, Lisa Wheeler and Heather Borowski. 

So far the ladies have been playing cautious.  In some cases, absurdly tight.  Over in the corner of the room, an interesting hand took place between three unknowns.  With the blinds at $25-$50, the UTG player open shoved all-in for $1,500.  The button thought for a few seconds before re-shoving all-in for $3,400.  The big blind instantly and proudly mucked KK face up for all to see.  The UTG player showed down QJ and the Button showed KQ.  Embarassed, the big blind stated that one of them must of had Aces and spent the remainder of the hand shaking her head in disbelief.  I did too.  The board came KJJ42 and the UTG player caught trip Jacks to double up.  The silence at the table was incredibly uncomfortable and a once chatty table took a few minutes before coming back to life. 

The ladies event has certainly brought out the nicer side of the players.  Some of the bustouts have even been followed by hugs and emotional goodbyes. 

Evelyn Ng was the only notable bustout in the first hour.

With the elimination of Maureen Feduniak in 17th ($8,460), the final two tables were set.  At Table 55 players included Thor Hansen, Cory Zeidman and Phil Ivey. David Oppenheim, Marco Traniello, Mike Wattell and five others were sat at neighboring Table 56.  Within a few hands Wattell eliminated Helmut Koch. 

Cory Zeidman, who last level dipped as low as $7,000, had built his stack up to approximately $80,000.  He got involved in a huge pot with both a straight and a heart flush draw. When he missed on seventh street he had to muck with only $10,000 left in his stack ,even though there was roughly $170,000 in the pot. Shortly afterward he doubled up with ace high, but this wasn't enough to spur a comeback.  Zeidman was later eliminated in 14th place ($10,998.)

Meanwhile, Phil Ivey and his neighbor in seat seven have been biding their time between hands by eating M&M's from an unusual tubed canister.  When Ivey ran out, seat seven had someone run and get them both more tubes.
