Big Hands/Storylines:
An Unlikely Win for Jim Downend
On a board of Q1098, Jim Downend made a bet of 20,000 after being checked to by his opponent. His opponent made the call, and the dealer put out the Q on the river. Again his opponent checked, and Downend counted out bets of various sizes before ultimately checking behind and turning over 33. His opponent nodded slowly and rechecked his hand a few times. “That’s actually good,” he said as he showed his A6 before tossing it into the muck. “I guess I missed a bet,” he added as the dealer pushed the pot to Downend. An ace, six, seven, or any heart would have won the pot for his opponent, meaning that Downend had 18 cards to dodge on the river.
Marco Johnson Puts the Pressure On
A late position player raised the pot pre-flop by making it 10,500 to go. Marco Johnson was immediately next to act, and pushed all in. All the other players folded, and the action was on the initial raiser. The player knocked the table and threw his cards into the muck, surrendering the pot to Johnson. After picking up that pot, Johnson’s stack sat at more than 100,000 in chips.
A Miracle Occurs for Gary Long
Facing a raise from a middle position opponent, Gary Long moved all in from his big blind for less than 12,000. He turned over AK, a coin flip against his opponent’s JJ. The flop came down A93, prompting Long to look up at the spectators. “It’s a miracle,” Long jokingly told them as he dodged a jack on both the 8 turn and 6 river. Despite the alleged divine intervention, Long’s stack improved to only around 20,000.
