Bach Wastes No Time

David Bach had a short-stacked opponent coming back from the 20-minute break, and it only took one hand for all the chips to go into the middle when they returned. Bach held A4 and led after the flop came A62. His opponent started in decent shape with 77, but he never got the help he needed as the J came on the turn and 10 was the river.

Mehrmand Advances

Davood Mehrmand had his opponent down to 900 in chips after the player committed his big blind, then folded to a bet on a flop of 664. Now in the small blind, the player raised to be all-in preflop and showed K7. Mehrmand made the call with Q2. The flop came J103, and his rival still led with the 4 on the turn. But the 2 on the river paired Mehrmand and brought the match to an end.

Bloch Gets it Done

Andy Bloch's opponent had just 2025 and committed it all preflop, showing 75. Bloch led with the K6. Bloch hit the flop that came K84, though his opponent had a gutshot straight draw. But the 8 on the turn and 9 on the river ended the match.

Bellande Trying to Close, Finally Gets There

Jean-Robert Bellande had a 22,000 to 8,000 edge in chips on his heads-up opponent, but struggled to put the match away. He knocked his rival down to 5,000 in chips after a board of 76462, when he held 74 for two flopped pair, despite a later counterfeit. But he gave those chips back when his opponent had a well-disguised straight with ace-three in his hand.
Bellande eventually was able to put his opponent away with three minutes remaining in the level.

At Long Last

David Orvis was able to put his opponent away, thanks to taking 3000 chips in a hand when the board read Q85810. Orvis only held KJ for king-high, but that was enough. It left his opponent with just 425 in chips, and they went in on the big blind the next hand. Orvis held Q10 and his rival a dominated 104. The board finished 88653 and queen-high was enough.

Two Tables Left

It took only 15 minutes to eliminate 3 participants and reach the final 18 players. Players were drawn to their new seats and play resumed. Another 3 players were eliminated before the end of the level, leaving us with only 15 players left.

Watkinson Makes Nice Laydown

Lee Watkinson raised to 18,000 from early position and was met by a raise from Keith Lehr. The bet was 45,000 more to Watkinson who only thought for seconds before folding 9-9 face-up. Lehr sportingly showed his J-J and congratulated Watkinson on a nice fold.

Cheung Eliminates Perry

Robert Cheung raised to 20,000 from middle position and Rob Perry moved all-in from the small blind for about 55,000. Cheung called, saying, “I don’t have much.” Cheung turned over QJ and was delighted to see Perry flip 77. The flop was 944, but the turn was the Q and Perry tossed his orange high into the air in frustration (catching it as it came down, of course). The turn 8 brought no help and Perry was eliminated in 20^th place.

Kitai Does In Quinn

Dan Quinn limped on the button, Davidi Kitai call from the small blind, and Michael Binger checked his option. The flop rolled out QJ7 and the two blinds checked to Quinn who bet 12,000. Kitai called and Binger folded. The turn was the A. Kitai checked again, Quinn bet 42,000, and Kitai raised a nominal amount to put Quinn all-in. The two showed their cards:

The river was the 5 and Quinn was eliminated in 19^th place.

Level Five Recap

There are around 420 players remaining from the original 534 and play continues to crawl along. John Juanda has emerged as the new chip leader with David Mitchell-Lolis, Davood Mehrmand and Humberto Brenes all in the top five.

2005 World Series of Poker bracelet winner Denis Ethier has been eliminated from today's tournament. Ethier was all in on a board of K 6 2 5 for his last $250. The river was the 3 and Ethier was up agains two opponents. Ethier showed A A and his opponent showed A 4, having rivered the wheel. Neither player had a qualifying low and Ethier left the tournament area in a hurry.

Robert Mizrachi, C.K. Hua, "Minneapolis" Jim Meehan and two other players were all involved in a hand for $200 preflop. The flop came A A 6 and Meehan checked. Hua and Mizrachi both checked and the player in seat two bet out $200. Seat five and Meehan both folded and Hua bumped it up to $400. Mizrachi and the player in seat two called and the turn was the 4. Hua bet out $400 and Mizrachi and the player in seat two called. The river was the 6 and Hua bet out $400 again. Mizrachi called and so did the player in seat two. Hua showed A J 7 6 for the flopped full house and Mizrachi showed Q 5 3 2 for the low.

Break Time

The players in today's Omaha eight-or-better tournament have been given a 20 minute break following level four. The field is still rather large, as not many players are being eliminated. That being said, Perry Friedman and Allen Kessler have been eliminated from today's event.

David Mitchell-Lolis, who has been having a great 2007 World Series with multiple large cashes, is the new chip leader. Mitchell-Lolis took that distinction from Davood Mehrmand shortly before the level break.

Level 12 Recap

After taking a short break, 57 players returned to the remaining 7 tables in the $5,000 World Championship of Omaha Eight or Better event.  Blinds have increased to $1,500-$3,000, with limits at $3,000-$6,000. 

Stacked Tables

 Because of table balancing and breaking, a number of stacked tables have emerged.  Table 51 played home to David Benyamine, Marc Karam, Mike Matusow and Kirill Gerasimov.    At table 56 Gavin Smith, Davood Mehrmand and Todd Brunson were all battling it out as well.  With payouts beginning at at 27 players, the money bubble was just on the horizion. Tournament directors broke a table fifteen minutes into the level.  This evidenced the fact that the pace of eliminations was ramping up. 

Hellmuth Wears Short Shorts...

 The shorts are pretty average in length, actually, but seeing Phil Hellmuth's lanky frame in something beside his usual black pair of jeans is still very surprising.  Hellmuth is back to rail the event, which he took to doing last night after busting from the limit hold'em event.  He apparently has a bet with Ivey as to results of Mike Matusow in the event and is therefore sweating Matusow.

Matusow Climbs the Leaderboard

The players are on a 15 minute following the completion of the last level. There are less than 330 players left and the money starts at 98. Official numbers and payouts have been posted in the payouts section.

Mike Matusow doubled up early in the round to around $20,000 and looked up from his stack saying, "this is torture man. Torture." Matusow continued to climb up the ranks of this tournament and now has $48,000, the result of a good call for a big pot. With the board showing J10410, Matusow's opponent pushed all in for $10,000. Matusow went into the tank for a long time and eventually called. Matusow turned over A-J for top two and his opponent showed the bluff and turned over A-9. The river was the 6 and Matusow took down the large pot, esentially doubling him up. After the hand Matusow said, "something just wasn't right. I figured hey, I've made wrong calls before, I'll make this one." Matusow's instincts were right and he now sits amongst the chip leaders.

Joe Sebok wasn't as fortunate as Matusow, having busted out in the last level. Sebok was card dead for much of the afternoon and found himself all in with pocket eights. His opponent held pocket jacks and when the board came 9-5-3-K-Q, Sebok never improved. Also eliminated this round were J.C. Tran, Young Phan, Michael Binger and Paul Wolfe.

Before his elimination, Paul Wolfe sat at a table that had been gathering a lot of attention. The never quiet Davood Mehrmand had gotten in the habit of berating the players at his table, especially the woman in the five seat. The floorman seemed to be posted at this table just to make sure nothing got out of hand. Tony Cousineau got into the act from the neighboring table, yelling at Paul Wolfe. "You got everything under control over there Paul?" asked Cousineau. Wolfe replied, "I'm just watchin him berate everyone at the table. It's ridiculous." During all this, John Esposito sat down at the table and immediately became concerned with the situation he was walking in to. "Honey, don't worry about that guy. (Mehrmand) He does this everywhere he goes. I'm not gonna stand for it. (To Mehrmand) You just be quiet!" Esposito commanded respect as he sat down. "I can't believe nobody stood up for her. You guys ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Don't worry honey, Uncle Johnny is here." The nonsense present at the table earlier seems to be calmed now that Esposito has arrived.

Play will resume following the break and continue for approximately one half of a level and the players will go on dinner break.

Early Exits and Late Arrivals

Level 1 was complete madness and utter chaos infused into one. With approximately 1,300 players so far, and alternates still hugging the rail waiting for their shot at glory, this event is far from even beginning, never mind being far from over. 

Event 12 is over however, for several pros, as other pros wait to claim the now empty seats of their fallen comrades. Thomas Wahlroos suffered an early fate today when he, by his own admission, “Got greedy on a value bet.” On a board of J73108, Wahlroos bets $600 on the river and his opponent in Seat-5 comes over the top and moves all-in. Pot committed now, Wahlroos makes the call and his opponent flips over Q6 for the flush. Wahlroos laughs as he ships his entire stack across the table except for one $25 chip. “That was a value bet and I got greedy there”, he says. The very next hand Wahlroos is forced all-in for $25 from the big blind. He looks to his right at Nam Le and says, “A chip and a chair, right?” Well he didn’t have that chip much longer and that chair was waiting to be filled when Wahlroos flipped over K9 against the one caller’s QJ. Wahlroos was surprised to be ahead, but that glimmer of hope quickly fades as the dealer burns and turns the Q in the window.

Next to hit the rail was Davood Mehrmand when he makes a pre-flop raise of $250. A player calls from the button followed by Joe Sebok from the big blind. The flop comes 872 and Sebok checks to Mehrmand who this time bets $275. The button folds and Sebok check-raises to $1,000. At this point Mehrmand moves all-in and Sebok quickly calls. Mehrmand shows A10 for ace-high while Sebok flips over A8 for top pair on the flop. The turn and river bring the 8 and the 9, no help to Mehrmand as he is eliminated in the first level of Day 1.

Dinner Break

Players in the $2,000 No-Limit have just gone on dinner break with twenty six minutes remaining in Level 7. There are roughly 330 players remaining in this event and play will resume at 9:00p.m.

While some players spent the first half of Level 7 protecting their short-stacks, others spent their time racing for chips. J.C. Tran raises $1,500 from the small blind and makes a caller out of Seat-4. The flop comes AK2, and Tran moves all-in for $3,200. Seat-4 calls and flips over 99 while Tran shows A7. The turn and river bring the 10 and the 8 as Tran rakes the pot and doubles up yet once again.

Davood Mehrmand wasn’t as lucky when he shoved all-in right before the dinner break. The player in the cutoff position raises $2,000 when Mehrmand comes over the top and pushes all-in for $8,050 more. The cutoff calls and shows AQ Mehrmand flips over the K. He tells his opponent, “I saw this one, now let’s see the other one.”, as he flips over the 4. The board comes A835J, and Mehrmand is eliminated.

Chantel McNulty was also eliminated right before the dinner break. She found herself all-in with A-5 in a three-handed pot. Unfortunately for McNulty she was up against A-A and 10-10.
