David Benefield was born May 17, 1986, and grew up in Texas. He learned to play poker at age 16 with his friends, and despite being good immediately, he never could imagine the kind of stakes he'd be playing by the time he was a legal adult. For a couple of years, he honed his game playing in low-limit underground cash games, and at 18, he started to play online poker. Benefield quickly improved, and lost interest in school even more quickly. He dropped out of college to focus on poker.
Benefield is now known as "Raptor" online, crushing the online cash games at the highest limits. He began making his mark on the live tournament circuit when he cashed in three events at the 2008 World Series of Poker, including the main event.
