Big Hands:
Cantu Takes In The Lights Of Broadway
Brandon Cantu raised preflop and the button was the only caller. Both players then saw a flop of KQ10.
Both players checked and the turn was the 4 and Cantu led for 11,500. His opponent made the call and they saw the 10 land on the river.
Cantu fired 30,700 and his opponent eventually made the call. Cantu then turned over AJ for a flopped Broadway-straight. His opponent mucked and Cantu took the pot. He was at 350,000.
The Harder They Fall
Filippo Candido raised to 6,200 from under the gun and Sam Farha made the call. The action folded around to Christian Harder in the big blind and he shoved for about 90,000.
Candido made the call and Farha got out of the way as Harder turned over AK, dominating Candido’s AQ.
The board ran out J73JK and Harder doubled up to 190,000.
Shorr Drops One
In a battle of the blinds, Shannon Shorr raised to 6,600 from the small blind. The big blind then repopped to 16,000 and Shorr made the call.
Both players saw the flop come down 942 and they both checked. The turn was the 6 and Shorr led out with 13,100. The big blind called and the river was the 5.
Both players checked and Shorr tabled A6. It was no good as the big blind tabled pocket queens to take down the pot. Shorr was down to 415,000.
Kassela Chips Up
Picking up the action after the flop came down 10107, Frank Kassela bet 7,500 and the button made the call. The turn was the 4 and Kassela checked.
The button bet 10,000 and Kassela called. The river was the Q and both players checked. Kassela then tabled 74 for tens and sevens and he took down the pot. He was at 270,000.
Antonius At A Quarter Mil
Patrik Antonius moved all in from the small blind and the big blind decided to put himself at risk by making the call.
Antonius: A8
Big Blind: A2
Antonius was dominating and the flop came down A96, giving Antonius a stranglehold on the hand. The turn was the 3, a blank. The river was the 8, giving Antonius an unnecessary two pair and he scored the knockout. He was at 250,000.
Rolf Slotboom Takes Big Hit
There was a flurry of raises preflop which ended up with Rolf Slotboom calling the all-in bet of his opponent for 67,000.
Slotboom showed QQ and was way behind his opponent’s KK.
“There are lots of queens in that deck,” pleaded Slotboom as the dealer dealt out the A36 fop. “Queen, Queen, Queen, save the best for last,” Slotboom continued.
The turn was the 9 and the river was the A and Slotboom dropped to just 54,000.
Shulman Eliminated
Barry Shulman committed the last of his chips on a flop of Q68 and found some bad news.
Shulman showed A6 and was trailing his opponent’s KQ. Shulman would need to hit his five-outer to keep his main event hopes alive, but the 4 on the turn and the 5 on the river sent Shulman home just shy of the money.
Matt Matros Takes One
We got to the table as the flop was being dealt and there was already well over 100,000 in the middle.
The flop came out AJ4 and a player in the blinds checked over to Matt Matros who bet out 55,000. That sent the player in the blinds deep into the tank before finally folding.
Matros took the pot and cracked the 300,000 mark as his stack grew to 325,000.
Full House For Bellande
The board read 10936 when Jean-Robert Bellande and Andrew Brown got all of the money in the middle.
Bellande was way ahead of Brown when he showed the 33 for a flopped set of threes and Brown was left with just unimproved KK. The river was the 9, which filled up Bellande and he doubled up to 255,000 in chips and Brown fell to 360,000.
Kostritsyn Wins a Big Pot
The player in the hijack seat checked over to Alexander Kostritsyn on the button with the flop reading Q910.
Kostritsyn bet 15,000, the hijack seat raised to 31,400 and Kostritsyn made the call. The turn was the 9 and the hijack bet out 44,700, which was called by Kostritsyn.
The river was the J and both players checked. Kostritsyn showed QJ and his opponent showed a complete bluff when he tabled the 7-6.
Nguyen Scores a Double Up
It was a battle of the blinds when the player in the small blind raised and Scotty Nguyen put in a three-bet from the big blind. Nguyen had put in nearly all of his chips and apparently, the small blind thought all of them were in as he made the call and tabled A-J.
“I’m not all-in, baby,” said Scotty as the dealer put out a flop of 2-2-4. They got the rest of his chips in the middle and Nguyen showed pocket queens. The queen on the turn assured Nguyen’s double up and he is up to 140,000.

Stacked Tables Part 1
Dec 08, '08
One table to keep an eye on includes Arnaud Mattern (who has made it back to the 7,000 mark after his early disaster), Stefan Mattsson, Joseph Mouawad, and Trond Erik Eidsvig.
An early casualty was former Card Player European Bureau Chief Rolf Slotboom when he was left cruelly crippled with one measly green chip (worth 25) after his pocket kings were beaten by A-Q. No chip and a chair scenario to come, he left shortly after. To rub salt in the wounds, the dealer responsible for the hands dealt was his own girlfriend.

Notable Hands:
While we don't yet have a hand with Phil Hellmuth, he has informed us that if he busts out of this tournament before midnight, he will have been eliminated from three different tournaments in the same day, perhaps breaking another personal best record.
The Master Scoops
Showing the J, Men Nguyen completed on third street. He proceeded to fire on every following round of betting, showing JA79 against one opponent, who called him down showing 38J10. Men flashed the 9 at the end of the hand, which was apparently enough to take down the whole pot.
Slotboom Suffers
Rolf Slotboom called the final bet on seventh street showing A622. He then mucked his cards after his opponent showing 2795 rolled over his buried cards: 8610, for a flush, a six card straight, and an 8 low to scoop the pot.
Traniello Chops
Marco Traniello completed on third street and led out on every consecutive round of betting. He was called down to the end by only one player.
Traniello: (A6)5A27(6)
Opponent:(74) 6AQ3 (6)
His opponent made a 7-6-4 low to best Traniello's 7-6-5 to take the low half of the pot.

$1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo - Level 2
Jun 26, '08
Players are now on a 20-minute break.
Ante: 25
Bring In: 25
Big Blind: 75
Limits: 75/150
Players Entered: 534
Big Hands:
Slotboom Second Best
Rolf Slotboom appeared to have all kinds of potential. He was showing 4 and joined three others who were showing treys after the initial deal. When Slotboom drew the A on fourth street he led out for 75 and was called by two of the three players. Slotboom added the 5 on fifth street and bet 150, and again he picked up one caller and one fold. The 6 on sixth street appeared to clinch at least a chopped pot for Slotboom, who only needed a card under an eight without pairing up. His opponent was showing 3229. After another bet following the seventh and final card, Slotboom shrugged and showed the bad news. His hole cards included a five and six, which was only good for two pair. His opponent showed Jack-9-8, and his two pair of nines and deuces were good to sweep the pot.
Bellande Scoops Nice Pot
Jean-Robert Bellande took the initiative from the outset, betting from fourth street on after play was checked to him in a heads-up battle. Bellande held the 6 to open, then added the 586. His opponent called to the end, showing J2Q10. After the seventh card was dealt, and another bet was called, Bellande rolled over 8-6-4 for a full house. His opponent mucked his hand.
Sklansky Busts One
David Sklansky busted out a short-stacked David Levi with a decent low and, well, enough of a high. Sklansky was dealt one of three fours to open, and had the bring-in with the 4. Levi and two other players called, and when Sklansky drew the A on fourth street he led out with the betting and never relinquished the reins, though two players folded to the action. Sklansky added the J on fifth street and the 7 on sixth, which finally put Levi all-in. Sklansky then showed 7-5-2 for a seven-low and pair of sevens for high. Levi, now showing 8527, had QJ3 in the hole and failed to pair up for even half the pot.
With many of the top pros playing in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event at the same time slot as the stud tournament, it isn't a stacked field in the Brasilia Room. However, John Phan, winner of two gold bracelets already in this WSOP, he was a late arrival to the table featuring Marco Traniello.

Hands and Storylines:
"The Donator" heads on out
In a blind vs. blind battle in limit hold'em, Stuart Patterson got his last few chips in against John Keefe with J-9 and was behind Keefe's Q-2. The flop came Q-5-2, giving Keefe two pair, and the turn and river were five and seven, respectively.
Le's bluff on river fails
Playing no'limit hold'em, Nam Le moved all in when Alex Jalai checked to him with the board showing A-8-7-K-5. They had nearly the number of chips remaining, and ultimately Jalai made the call with A-9. As soon as he called Le mucked and asked if he still had chips. Le later showed 6-3 and found out that Jalai did indeed have him covered.
Slotboom risks last few chips and is out
Rolf Slotboom moved all in for just a couple thousand and found himself up against two others. His 7-3 was a distant third and thought he caught a seven on the river it was too little, too late.

Game Over for Super Dario
Dario Minieri, nursing a short stack, ultimately decided to move all in with pocket eights, but ran into 99. The board ran out KQ4A6 to make his opponent the nine high flush, and Minieri was eliminated.
Slotboom Fills Up, Heads Out
After Rolf Slotboom and George Shah tussled in a big blind versus button matchup, ultimately won by Shah, they played for keeps a few hands later. In a five way limped pot, the flop came J54, and the action checked around to Slotboom, positioned on the button. Slotboom bet a pot-sized 1,500, and only Shah made the call. The turn was the rather scary-looking 6, and both players checked. After the J paired the board on fifth street, Shah led out for 3,000. Slotboom considered before deciding to move all in for about 5,000 more. "I call, I call," said Shah excitedly, tabling 87 for the straight flush. "I thought you might have that," said Slotboom. "I almost didn't raise." He showed Shah two red fives before tossing them into the muck. Slotboom was eliminated, while Shah is up to about 15,000.
Players have departed for a ninety minute dinner break.

Rasputin Lives!
Jun 20, '08
Blinds: 25-50
Entrants: 550
Eliminations: Allen Kessler
Big Hands:
Early Raises At Stacked Table
Three poker heavyweights collided with raises and reraises on a flop of 544. Burt Boutin led out for 300 and was called by recent bracelet winner Scott Seiver. Next to act was Thomas Wahlroos, who raised to 1,200. Boutin let go of his hand but Seiver reraised yet again to 2,500, prompting Wahlroos to nod in belief that Seiver had a hand and muck his cards. Seiver took a nice early pot, increasing his stack by 1,500.
Off To A Good Start
After early eliminations in recent tournaments, Juha Helppi is off to a good start in this one. Helppi bet 325 from the button on a flop of A83 after the big blind checked to him. The big blind called and the turn was the 8. Action was again checked to Helppi who bet 525. This time the big blind folded and Helppi took the early pot.
O'Donnell Gets Caught
Kevin O'Donnell pushed all in after the river on a board of 86293 and was called by his seat 7 opponent. His opponent turned over two red tens. "Nice call," said O'Donnell, who flashed an ace and a queen before tossing his cards into the muck. O'Donnell's down to only a few hundred in chips.
Filippi Doubles Through Olson
Amnon Filippi was all in on the turn on a board of 10662 and Carl Olson called with pocket aces. Filippi tabled 108 for tens up with a flush draw, but a severe underdog to Olson. The 7 on the river made Filippi's hand, however, doubling him up to about 3,000 and taking a bite out of Olson's stack. Olson is down to about 1,500.
Slotboom Doubles Up
Rolf Slotboom moved all in over the top of a pot-sized bet of 1,650 after a flop of QJ5. Slotboom only had about 600 more and was quickly called by his seat 2 opponent. "Just aces," said Slotboom. "You probably have queen jack or something like that." In reality his opponent held AQ, the turn and the river bricked, and Slotboom chipped up to almost 5,000.
Kessler Busted
Seat 8 raised before the flop and Allen Kessler called out of the small blind. The flop was K85 and Kessler checked. The original raiser bet 400 and Kessler called. A seven hit on the turn and again Kessler checked, and again seat 8 fired. Kessler moved all in and seat 8 snap-called, showing 97 for a straight flush draw with a pair of sevens. Kessler tabled ace king, ahead--until the river, when the 3 spiked to make the seat 8 player his flush and bounce Kessler from the tournament.

Slotboom ousted by Jacob
After Jacob raised from early position, Rolf Slotboom reraised all in from the big blind for over 10,000 more. Jacob made the call with A9 and was in good shape against Slotboom's QT. The board came 9633A and Jacob raked in the pot. At the end of the level Jacob had about 30,000 chips thanks to losing a coinflip with pocket jacks against A-K.
Where's my table?
At the beginning of the level the tournament director announced to the section that a player was unable to find his table and asked for the people at his table to let him know. At that point everyone began to laugh and turn to see who it was. Finally a table off to the side yelled out to him and let him know.

Eliminations: Kathy Liebert
Big Hands:
John Phan Busts
John Phan got all in preflop with KJ against his opponent's A8. The board ran Q-7-4-Q-A and Phan was eliminated.
Chan Doubles an Opponent
On a board of K76, Johnny Chan called a short stack's all in bet for a little over a thousand. The all in player showed 1010 and Chan showed he had many outs with his QJ. However, the turn took away some of those outs, coming 10 and the river bricked, coming 5. Chan's opponent doubled up and Chan saw his stack decrease to around 2,500.
"Oh Come On," James Crippled
Kenna James jokingly said, "Oh come on," when the player on the button reached to put in a raise to 600. But James made the call and both players checked the A53 flop. On the 7 turn the button bet 500 and James made the call. The river brought the 2 and James checked. When the button bet 700, James checkraised to 2,100 - nearly enough to put the button all in. After thinking it over the button shrugged and made the call, and it turned out to be a good one. He showed A9 and James mucked his hand.
Several hands later James moved over seat 8's raise all in preflop and was called by the player8. James sheepishly turned over A-8 but was ahead of his opponent's K-Q. However, the board ran Q-J-6-10-9 to give seat 8 a higher straight and the double up. James was down to around 1,500 after the hand.
Lindgren Gets a Caller
In a limped battle of the blinds, Erick Lindgren checked from the big blind and the flop came J72. Both players checked and again checked the 8 turn. On the A river Lindgren bet out 300. His opponent smiled and thought for a moment then called. Lindgren showed A6 for a pair of aces and took the pot.
Kathy Liebert Eliminated
The player in seat 10 raised to 250 from the cutoff and Kathy Liebert called from the big bling. The flop came 752, and seat 10 bet 1,200. Liebert started counting and then recounting her chips. She told her opponent, "I'm just trying to decide if I want to go all in now or wait until the turn." Then she deicded the flop would be best, coming over the top and moving all in. Seat 10 called anf both players turned over their cards.
Liebert: 66
Seat 10: KK
Liebert was behind on the flop, and neither the turn (5) nor the river (Q) improved her hand. Liebert got up from her chair and exited the tournament room as seat 10 raked a good pot.
Rolf Slotboom Doubles Up
Rolf Slotboom got it all in with KQ on a K106Q4 board. The action and the other player's hand is unknown, we just saw Slotboom raking the pot.

$1,500 Hold'em - Chips Flying Early
Jun 19, '08
Blinds: 25-50

Big Hands:
Tran Takes Early Pot From Murphy
J.C. Tran and John Murphy checked a flop of QJ9. On the 3 turn, Tran led out 425 and was called by Murphy. The river was the Q, pairing the board. Tran threw out a 1,000 chip and Murphy reluctantly made the call. "Straight," was all Tran said as he flipped over 108 for the flopped straight. Murphy mucked his hand and was left with around half his starting stack of 3,000, while Tran is approaching 5,000.
Shannon Shorr Doubles Through Lex Veldhuis
On a flop of J43, Shannon Shorr bet 700 from early position and Lex Veldhuis came over the top and moved all in from the button. Shorr tanked for a few minutes and Veldhuis started to engage him in some light coversation. "I probably have 75", said Lex. "If you have two nines, I would call." Shorr replied, "I have two queens." Veldhuis says, "Well, that probably consttitutes a slow roll then." Shorr made the all in call for 2,500, Veldhuis had 500 left behind.
Shorr was telling the truth and turned over QQ for the overpair. Veldhuis was not, showing AJ for top pair, top kicker. The turn and river were the 9 and 9, and Shorr doubled through Veldhuis. Veldhuis shook it off right away, shoving from the cutoff the very next hand, stealing the blinds.
A Pot and a Smile
On a board of 1095, Vanessa Rousso bet 800 and her opponent in seat 8 was next to act. As he was thinking about what to do, Rousso took off her headphones and fired an unlikely shot, a smile. It was enough to make up her opponent's mind as he made the call. The turn was the 5 and seat 8 checked. The action was on Rousso and she lifted herself off her seat just a bit, extended her arm, and came back down to her chair, pounding the table ever so slightly to check. The river brought the A and seat 8 led out with 625. Rousso just called and her opponent turned over A10 for top two pair. It was useless, however, as Rousso showed 99 for nines full of fives. She was at around 5,500 after the hand.
Aces Beat Queens
Daniel O'Brien, who has already enjoyed two deep runs in this year's WSOP, opened to 150 from the UTG +1 and Cyril Benssousan quickly made it 500 to go. The action folded around to O'Brien, who decided to move all in and was quickly called by Benssousan. O'Brien tabled QQ against Benssousan's AA, and if a flop of AJ4 had O'Brien drawing bad. the 9 on the turn had him drawing worse. O'Brien was eliminated mid-way through the first level, while Benssousan is up to more than 6,000.
Aces Beat Queens... Again
A couple of tables away, the exact same scenario was playing out when Mike Kelly's AA eliminated an unknown player holding QQ. Recent bracelet winner Scott Seiver, who was sitting between the two players, claimed he folded pocket jacks.
Slotboom Down
On a board of 1096, the player in seat 10 bet 125 and Rolf Slotboom raised to 525 total. Seat 10 made the call and the turn came with the 9. Both players checked and the river brought the A. Seat 10 led out with 500 and Slotboom went into the tank. He reached for his chips as if he was about to call, but then pulled his hand back toward his mouth. He looked at his hand one more time and let it go into the muck. He was down to around 2,200.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Rebuy Madness
Sorel Mizzi and Peter Gould decided that they were going to ship it blind. A third player went along in the first hand. Mizzi showed J322, Gould showed K843, seat 2 AQ74. The board came QJ2J2, giving MIzzi quads. Mizzi was up to 18,000 after the hand and Gould and seat 2 both rebought with a double add-on.
The next hand Mizzi and Gould did the same thing. Mizz showed QJ73 and Gould showed J1082. The board ran 99584, giving Gould the best hand and double up and making both playerse essentially even in chips with 12,000 apiece.
In the third hand, seat 2 once again got involved in in Mizzi and Gould's madness. The three players got it all in and seat 2 showed AKJJ. Mizzi showed J732. Gould showed K855. Board ran 32Q104. Mizzi's pair of deuces took the entire pot, moving him up to 30,000 in chips with the level only halfway finished. Gould and seat 2 rebought with double add-ons and the players decided to no longer play blnd.
Boutin Knows Omaha
Burt Boutin knows a few things about Omaha, having won a bracelet in the $5,000 rebuy pot-limit Omaha event last year. He was off to a good start today, raising to 350 and getting one caller preflop. The flop came 542 and Boutin fired out 600 and was again called by his opponent. Both players checked the 6 turn, but when Boutin bet 1,500 on the 9 river his opponent mucked.

Clonie Gowen raised to 300 from early position and got 4 calls - seat 7, Rolf Slotboom, Steve Hudak and David Williams on the big blind. The flop was K52 and action checked around. The turn was the 3, Hudak checked and Williams led out for a pot-sized 1,500. Gowen mucked, seat 7 called and Hudak moved all in for 950 more. Williams and seat 7 called. Williams showed A7J9 for the nut flush draw and Judak and seat 7 both had A-4 for the wheel. The river was the 6, giving Williams the nut flush and scooping a big pot of close to 10,000.
Fricke With the Early KO
Players are getting all in and rebuying left and right. Jimmy Fricke called an opponent's all in not five minutes into the level. The board was J-4-3-10-8 and Fricke showed A-Q-9-7 for a straight. His opponent mucked and racked up his first rebuy.
Brenes Leds Medic Have One
Humberto Brenes limped under the gun and Nenad Medic raised to 250 from the small blind. Andrew Black and Brenes called. After the dealer layed out the flop, a floorman approached to inform the table that the blinds were in fact 50-100 and not 25-50, which were the blinds that the players had posted in the hand. Black started to tell the dealer not to guess and Medic led out for 1,000 on the flop of A95 and was called by Brenes. The turn was the 2 and Medic led out for another 1,500. Brenes called again but then folded to Medic's all in push when the 9 fell on the river.
I Am The Wahlroos
Thomas Wahlroos raised from early position to 350 only to have the player on his left reraise to 1,000. Action folded back around to Wahlroos who made the call, checking the flop of Q62. His opponent bet 2,000 and Wahlroos check-raised all in. His opponent called and they showed their hands. Wahlroos had 8674. His opponent held KKA6. The turn was the 7 giving Wahlroos two pair and the river was the 10, improving neither player and giving the pot to Wahlroos for a double up.

Lee Busts Another
Bernard Lee eliminated another player when he pushed an early position raiser all in holding pocket nines. He was behind his opponent, who had two aces, but the flop came nine five five, and Lee won the pot. Lee is now in commanding position entering Day 2, with an astounding 55 original buy-ins.
Scott, Slotboom Eliminated
Justin Scott, who accumulated a ton of chips early, saw his tournament life reduced to a simple coin flip with Philip Yeh: Scott held K10 and Yeh 77 for a pot worth about 25,000 chips. The board ran out Q5248, and Scott was done for the day.
Shortly after the bubble burst, Rolf Slotboom was all in on a board of J94 holding AJ against his opponent's A9--only to see the 9 peel off on the turn.

Hold 'em
Slotboom Gets Sunk By Suck Out
Rolf Slotboom, who had been short stacked for much of the day, was all in preflop and in good shape to double up with pocket kings against his opponent's A-K. Slotboom's cowboys proved to be ace magnets, however, and his opponent flopped a bullet to send Slotboom to the rail in 25th place.
Lederer Doubles
Jonathon Depa raised under the gun to 7,000, folding action around to Howard Lederer, who reraised the size of the pot from the big blind for an additional 17,500, leaving himself with only a handful of chips behind. Depa thought for some time before making the raise to put Lederer all in, and Lederer made the automatic call, showing 88. Lederer's hand held up against Depa's AQ as the board ran out 54393, doubling up to stick around at the last three tables.
Cunningham Cuts Down Leandri
Allen Cunningham put Jean Philippe Leandri all in preflop. Cunningham held K8, and was in a coinflip situation with Leandri's 66. Cunningham hit the flop when the dealer laid out K229Q, sending Leandri to the rail.
Omaha
Pescatori Fires
In a five way limped pot and a flop of Q73, Max Pescatori bet out for 5,000 from the small blind, pushing everyone else out and taking down a pot worth nearly 10,000.
Perrault Put Out
On a flop of 742, Pascal Perrault was moved all in by Martel De la Chesnaye.
Perrault: AAQ7
De la Chesnaye: 10764
The turn and river brought 10, 6, and De la Chesnaye's top two pair held up to take down the pot and send Perrault home in 22nd place.
