Big Hands and Storylines:
A Blessing in Disguise
As a result of a table break, Lee Watkinson found himself moved directly to Daniel Negreanu’s right. If that wasn’t bad enough, Phil Ivey also resides at the table. It turned out to be a fortuitous move, however, as Watkinson was soon to double up. Ivey, Watkinson, and Negreanu saw a flop of 976. Ivey checked to Watkinson, who moved all-in for about 20,000. Negreanu made the call and after Ivey folded the two showed their cards:
Watkinson: T8
Negreanu: JJ
Watkinson had flopped perfectly and Negreanu was now drawing incredibly slim. The turn 4 gave Negreanu a flush draw, making Watkinson sweat a little. The river was the 4, fooling Negreanu for a moment, but sealing the pot for Watkinson. The pot took Watkinson up to around 45,000. Negreanu, unphased, still has over 90,000.
“Good Call”
With the board reading JJ3T, Romuald Pycior checked to Michael Binger, who slid out a bet of 4,000. Pycior made a quick call and the dealer flipped the 6. Again Pycior checked, enticing Binger to lay out a bet of 8,500. Pycior thought a bit more carefully this time, but ultimately made the call. Binger whispered, “Good call” and Pycior flipped up his A3 in a none-too-convincing manner. The jacks and threes were best though, and Pycior now has 54,000.
Josephy Runner-Runnered
Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy got his last 10,000 chips in before the flop in a dominating position: his KK against Randy Cherkas’ JJ. The flop was a safe one: 976, but the turn Q gave Cherkas a flush draw. The river was the 3, completing the flush and sending a displeased Josephy out of the Amazon Room.
