Annie Duke Defeats Paul Wasicka ($25,000)
Mar 06, '10
In by far the most entertaining match of the tournament, Annie Duke and Paul Wasicka (pictured right) battled for over an hour and a half before a winner was determined.
Twice, Duke had Wasicka all in with the best hand, only to see him come from behind and stay alive. The second time, Wasicka was given the lead thanks to a river flush.
His good fortune is probably what had him apologizing almost immediately when Duke moved all in with A10 only for him to wake up with AA.
To top it off, the flop came AJ2 and had Duke drawing nearly dead. She picked up some life when the Q hit the turn, giving her four outs to the straight and the room went nuts when the K hit the river, giving her the winning straight and the chip lead.
The two got it in shortly after that and Duke managed to crack Wasicka’s pocket jacks with 8-5 suited. Wasicka was eliminated, picking up $25,000. Duke moves onto the Elite Eight to face Jerry Yang.

Arthur Azen was all in holding top set of jacks against his opponent who held pocket kings. The turn brings a king which leaves Azen only one out in the deck and he gets it on the river, giving him quads and a stack of over 50,000 in chips.
Paul Wasicka Picks Up Chips
One-time LAPC Main Event final tablist Paul Wasicka is already off to a good start with a stack of over 45,000 in chips. Wasicka took most of his chips from Ralph Perry who held top pair, top kicker on a jack-high board. Wasicka held a set of sevens and they were good enough to take a very large pot and put him near the top of the leaderboard.
ElKy Coming On Strong
Though he was absent for most of the series, Bertrand "ElKy" Grospellier is off to a fine start here in the main event with a stack of 75,000. We haven't scanned the entire room, but that's good for the overall chip lead, at least among the notables.

Featured Table
It took some time today, but a featured table has finally stood out above the rest.
Table 33
Seat 1: Paul Wasicka
Seat 2: Nick Schulman
Seat 3: Dan O'Brien
Seat 4: Antonio Esfandiari - David Pham moved in
Seat 6: Mike Sowers
Seat 8: Hoyt Corkins
Seat 9: Erica Schoenberg
Esfandiari Takes a Large Preflop Hit
Paul Wasicka bet 8,000 and Dan O'Brien raised to 23,000. Esfandiari reraised to 71,000 total, and Wasicka mucked. O'Brien then shoved all in and put Esfandiari on a decision for his tournament life. He eventually mucked and O'Brien took down the huge hand preflop. "Was that the right play, you're the expert," asked Esfandiari of Hoyt Corkins after the hand. This was the latest hand in a series of pots that have played out aggressively between O'Brien and Esfandiari. O'Brien has the upper hand so far, after leading for much of the day Esfadiari has been knocked down to 175,000.
Esfandiari Eliminated
Antonio Esfandiari moved all in preflop and Mike Sowers called him down. Esfandiari held A-K and Sowers A-Q. The board was dealt A-J-J-Q-3. Esfandiari was eliminated just short of the money after holding the chip lead for most of the tournament. This is a similar fate that he suffered at WPT Festa al Lago in late 2008.
Big Hands:
David Chiu Eliminated by Greg Mueller
On a flop of Q-J-8 David Chiu moved all in and Greg Mueller called him down. Chiu held A-10 and Mueller held Q-9. The turn and river bricked out and Chiu was knocked out of the tournament to start the last level of the night.
The Dragon Shows his Bluff
David Pham raised to 30,000 preflop after a series of players limped and then called a small raise to join a pot preflop. Three players mucked their hands and then Pham flipped up J4 as he collected the pot.
Maria Ho Eliminates One
Maria Ho just knocked out a player with two kings in the hole. Her opponent held A-K but Ho's hand held to win the pot. Ho held 90,000 after the hand.
Dan Shak Eliminates One
Dan Shak moved all in preflop for 65,000 and seat 2 called all in against him. Shak had pocket jacks and seat 2 held pocket queens. A jack hit on the flop, and then a fourth came on the river to make quads for Shak and eliminate his opponent.
Slaubaugh vs. Grospellier
On a flop of Q96 Cody Slaubaugh bet 15,500 from middle position and Bertrand Grospellier made the call from late position. The K fell on the turn and Slaubaugh bet 16,500. Grospellier made the call again and the 9 was dealt on the river. Both players checked and Slaubaugh turned up a bluff (42). Grospellier showed down AJ and won the hand to increase his stack.
Money Bubble
As time expired during day 3 the tournament was stuck on the money bubble. Play went to hand-for-hand with 64 players remaining and it actually continued past the end of level 16. Day 3 will end when one more player busts out.

Feb 24, '09

The flop came 743 and Arjang bet 20,000. Wasicka called and so did Farkye.
The turn was the 8 and Arjang checked. Wasicka also checked and then Farkye bet 45,000. Arjang called and Wasicka called.
The river was the 3 and Arjang check once again. This time, Wasicka bet 100,000. Farkye went into the tank for about 3 minutes before folding and Arjang made the call.
