Sterling Out in 9th
Jun 19, '10
Pot-Limit Hold’em
Matt Sterling Falls in 9th ($20,698)
Facing a raise from Kevin MacPhee to 40,000, Matt Sterling pushed all in for 128,000 and MacPhee called. Their hands:
Sterling: AK
MacPhee: 1010
The flop brought the wrong kind of red, coming Q65 to keep MacPhee ahead. The turn was the 6, leaving Sterling dependent on an ace or a king only. But the river brought the 10 to give MacPhee an unnecessary full house, and Sterling was out in 9th place, making $20,698.

Big Hands
Flaminio Malaguti Eliminated in Sixth Place ($24,824)
Flaminio Malaguti was short stacked and committed the rest of his stack from the small blind with AK against the A5 of David Williams.
The flop was safe for Malaguti, but a five on the turn was good enough to eliminate him from the tournament.
Matt Sterling Eliminated in Fifth Place ($35,058)
Matt Sterling was all in preflop against Greg Mueller and David Williams. The flop came out 754 and Mueller bet. Williams called and the turn was the 10.
Mueller bet again and Williams folded. Mueller showed 97 for a pair of sevens and Sterling showed Q8 for a straight draw.
The river was the 9 giving Mueller two pair and busting Sterling.

$10,000 World Championship Limit Hold'em - End of Day 1
Jun 15, '08
Play has concluded here on day 1 of the event 30, the $10,000 world championship limit hold'em tournament. The players will collect their bearings and get some rest tonight before reconvening in the Brasilia Room tomorrow at 3 p.m. PST. 98 players remain from the original 218 but only one will take home the first-prize of $496,931.
Here is a rundown of some of the action that took place on the final level of the day:
Blinds: 600-1,200
Players Left: 98 of 218
Chip Leaders:
Patrick Bueno - 88,000
Michael Mizrachi - 82,000
Kenneth Shei - 76,000
Matthew "mattster24" Sterling - 71,000
J.C. Tran - 68,000
Justin Bonomo - 67,000
Marco Traniello - 67,000
Alexander Kravchenko - 65,000
Brock "t soprano" Parker - 60,000
Terrence Chan - 58,000
Greg Mueller – 57,000
Average Stack: 45,000
Eliminations:
Bill Chen
Brandon Adams
Jennifer Harman
Big Hands and Storylines:
“Weak” Wahlroos Pips Parker
Thomas Wahlroos raised from early position and was called by Brock “t soprano” Parker in the big blind. Parker check-raised Wahlroos on a flop of 1085 and Wahlroos elected to call. Parker continued his aggression on the turn and river, betting both streets, and Wahlroos called him both times. Parker showed A10 for second pair, and when the Finn saw this he admitted, “I am so weak at this game,” before turning up his AA. The rockets blasted Wahlroos to 36,000. Parker still has a very healthy 60,000.
Sterling’s Straight Axes Adams
Brandon Adams got the majority of his chips in against Matt “mattster24” Sterling on a AQ8 flop. After Sterling put Adams all-in on the K turn the two revealed their hands:
Sterling: JT
Adams: AK
The river was the Q and Adams was sent packing. Sterling now has an impressive 71,000 chips to work with.
Odds, Schmodds
A very strange situation occurred in the last level involving Mike Wattel and the player to his left. Wattel and the player did a great deal of betting on the flop and turn. Then, on the river, with a board of Q953J, Wattel’s opponent tossed in his last 400 in chips.... into a pot of 21,000. Remarkably, after much consideration, Wattel folded. His opponent showed Q-Q, so we’ll give Wattel the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn’t have a straight.
The Mathematics of Value Bets
Bill Chen raised on the button and was three-bet by Justin Bonomo in the small blind. Bonomo bet into Chen on a flop of J55 and Chen called. Both players checked the 7 on the turn, and Bonomo bet again on the 2 river. Chen called, and Bonomo tabled AK. “Good value bet,” chimed Chen, who showed A-9. The pot helps Bonomo up to about 65,000 at the end of the day. Chen was eliminated only moments before the conclusion of day 1.

Big Hands:
Tension on the Bubble
With only 37 players remaining, tensions were high as the players anticipate the money. The clock was frozen at the end of level 25, and the tournament director announced that the play would continue at the 2000/4000 limit level until the bubble had been broken. As the tables were playing hand-for-hand, Matt Sterling had his blind raised by Erick Lindgren from middle position. Sterling had few enough chips to get it all in pre-flop, and Lindgren made the call with AK against Sterling’s AK. The flop contained three clubs, but the turn and river failed to deliver for Lindgren, and Sterling avoided being the bubble boy.
Nick Mao Eliminated on the Bubble
Nick Mao was the unlucky bubble boy for this event. While in the big blind, he faced a raise from Justin Bonomo in late position. Mao three-bet the raise, and the two were able to get all of Mao’s money into the pot before the flop fell. Mao eagerly flipped over his AK, but hopes sank when Bonomo tabled KK. Although the flop brought a gut-shot straight draw for Mao, the absence of a jack on the turn or river sent Mao home empty handed in 37th place. The remaining players will all receive at least $10,922.
Lindgren Finishes the Job on Sterling
Moments after narrowly escaping elimination outside of the money, Matt Sterling was finally eliminated in 36th place by Erick Lindgren. Sterling raised Lindgren’s blind, and Lindgren reraised all in. Sterling made the call and turned over A6. Lindgren again held ace-king, and Sterling didn’t receive any help from the board.
Phil Tom Adds to the New Chip Leader's Stack
On a board of 7332, Michael McKenna checked to the pre-flop aggressor, Phil Tom. Tom bet 6,000 and was quickly check-raised by McKenna for an additional 12,500. Tom considered the situation, and released his hand. With that pot, and for the first time since day 1, Ariel Schneller is no longer this event's chip leader. McKenna currently has over 200,000 in chips.
Barry Shulman Eliminated in 33rd Place
Barry Shulman also fell victim to the post-money round of eliminations after his top pair failed to improve against Erick Lindgren's overpair. Shulman will take home $10,922 for his finish.
