Growing up in Long Island, New York, Mickey Appleman has always been a tough nut to crack. A natural star at sports and intellectually savvy, Appleman received a degree from Rutgers. Appleman had a bright future in business but instead took a teaching job. To balance money, Appleman began handicapping sports in addition to his teaching duties.
After deciding to try his hand at high-stakes poker, Appleman quickly became a Vegas legend after he won four World Series of Poker titles, the first of which came in 1980. His latest WSOP victory came in 2003, when he won the $2,000 pot-limit hold'em title.
