Hour One Recap
Jul 09, '07
We’re about halfway through Level 1 now and the Amazon Room is surprisingly quiet today. Spectators have yet to enter the room and either has Phil Hellmuth, but there are plenty more pros here to keep us busy including reigning champion, Jamie Gold. Gold is joined in the field today by some of the most accomplished players in the game, such as Daniel Negreanu, Freddy Deeb, Ted Forrest, Chip Reese, and Layne Flack to name a few.
Announcements
Today marked the record for the oldest person to ever play in the WSOP Main Event with “Jumping” Jack Ury hitting the felt at 94-years old.
Barbara Enright was just acknowledged as the first women inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame. Multiple bracelet winner and the only women to make a main event final table, Enright joins the plentiful list of poker super stars that are present today in the Amazon Room.
Show Bill Some Respect
It’s been a bout a week now since Bill Edler won his first World Series of Poker Bracelet, and it is apparent that the novelty has not worn off as of yet. Edler comes into a pot for a $1,000 raise and the player in seat no. 4 re-raises to $3,200. Edler goes into the tank for at least five minutes before finally coming back over the top and moving all-in. Edler shifts the pressure onto his opponent and seat no. 4 goes into the tank for a few minutes himself. After some intense deliberation, seat no. 4 folds K K face up, and says, “Nice hand.” as he throws his hand into the muck.
The "Prince" Off to a Good Start
Jean Gaspard is off to a good start this morning, dragging in a dent pot with a pair of jacks. The player in seat no. 8 came in for a $300 raise and Gaspard just smooth called behind him followed by both players in the blinds. The flop came 10 3 2 and Gaspard bet out $900. Both seat no. 8 and the big blind fold their hand while the player in the small blind made the call. The turn brought the 3 and both players check around. The river brought the 8 and once again, both players check around. Gaspard turns over a pair of jacks and rakes the pot while his opponent tosses his hand into the muck.
Dwindling Online Presence?
A quick glance in the Amazon Room and one might be thrown off by the lack of online presence. In previous years, the Amazon Room was a vast sea filled with .net sponsorships and advertisements, but this year it seems as if PokerStars is the only online poker room still sending the qualifiers here in herds.
Euro Roundup
Today’s field has a smaller Euro contingent that the previous starting days but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Former World Champion Carlos Mortensen is playing as are William Thorson, Julian Thew, George Danzer, Paul Testud, Surindar Sunar, Thor Hansen, David Benyamine,Torstein Iversen, Adrian Walsh Martin De Kniff, Frederik Ostervold, Frank Cruess Callaghan, Dave Callaghan, Ken Powell, Willow Connolly, Don Fagan, Scott Gray and Padraig Parkinson.
Parkinson was caught with his hand in the cookie jar a couple of times already and ‘had to show some rather embarrassing hands.’ He was walking through the Amazon room back to his table when he was stopped by David Plastik. ‘I was wondering why you were walking around,’ asked a concerned Plastik. ‘That’s my best game – walking around,’ quipped Parkinson. ‘Mine’s the buffet,’ smiled Plastik.

Ken ‘KPNutz’ Powell looked a tad disgusted when on a board of J594 he called a $1,500 raise. The river came A and Powell lost the pot flipping over Q-Q only to find his opponent had A-J for two pair. He rolled his eyes to heaven in disgust.
Dave Callaghan has Daniel Negreanu at his table and the media are understandably taking a great deal of interest in the table.
