Outcome

Preflop, with four players remaining and blinds of 60,000-120,000 with a big blind ante of 120,000, Dan Stavila raised to 240,000 from the cutoff. Cody Wiegmann three-bet to 660,000 from the button. Stavila four-bet to 1,240,000, and Wiegmann folded.

Analysis

This hand took place with four players remaining. Ryan Laplante was the clear short stack at just shy of 10 big blinds, while the other three contenders all sat with at least 40 big blinds. This stack dynamic likely played a big factor in the decision making of the two chip leaders, who squared off in a preflop cutoff-vs-button raising war in this pot. Stavila opened the action with a min-raise off of a 47-big blind stack holding K-8 suited. Wiegmann, who was top dog at the time with 51 big blinds, looked down at A-5 and cut out a three bet, opting for a 2.75x sizing. Stavila is likely to open fairly wide from his position with the short stack in the small blind and the ICM-handcuffed middle stack in the big blind. Wiegmann might have thought that Stavila could be hesitant to get involved in a big pot without a strong holding given how short Laplante was. Stavila seemed to suss that potential line of thinking out, though. He responded to Wiegmann’s aggression with an even smaller (1.9x) four bet. “I would be curious to know what Wiegmann thinks of the timing there, because it was a pretty quick four bet, and we’ve seen some longer, drawn-out thought processes from Stavila,” said Venetian Poker Live commentator Donnie Peters. “Does he read into this as, ‘He just kind of decided that he’s snap four-betting me, given the dynamics of the situation, with kind of anything,’ or is he just so strong that he is four-betting fast?” Wiegmann did seem dubious of the move, but after a minute or so in the tank, opted to fold and move on to the next hand. Both players remained inside the top two after this mini game of chicken. Laplante bowed out less than half an hour later, finishing fourth for $64,499.
