Analysis

While Dan Stavila came out on top in a war of aggression, this hand saw Cody Wiegmann unleash a multi-street assault that escalated to the point of a bluff shove on the river. Stavila raised from the small blind with Q-4 suited, going with a 3x sizing. Wiegmann came along with J-10 from the big blind and whiffed the flop completely. Stavila flopped bottom pair with backdoor flush possibilities and opted to check from out of position. Wiegmann seized the opening and fired an initial bluff of 1.75 big blinds. Stavila check-called and the turn paired the middle card from the flop while putting two hearts on board. Stavila checked a second time and Wiegmann’s second barrel was of the one-third-pot variety. Stavila made the call and the pot ballooned to 3,500,000 while Wiegmann was left with just 2,300,000. The 9Spade Suit saw another Stavila check. Wiegmann went into the tank for roughly a minute before pushing in his remaining chips to put Stavila to the test. The shove represented nearly a third of Stavila’s remaining stack. After two minutes of contemplation, Stavila passed up the hero call opportunity and folded the winner. He had come into the hand with a big chip lead, and while he remained atop the chip counts, Wiegmann was now within nine big blinds. Stavila went on to win this tournament in the end, earning $167,067 while Wiegmann cashed for $120,054 as the runner-up.
