Updates on Final Day (Apr 15, 06)

Jack Amyx Wins!

Jack Amyx wins the 2006 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic $5,000 No-limit hold'em event. He collected $589,035 in prize money (the largest prizepool so far), the diamond-gold bracelet, and qualified for a seat into the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship event on the 18th.

Jack Amyx dominates

It only took a couple of hands before Muchnik found himself all in against Amyx. Muchnik raised before the flop with Kd-9s, and Amyx called with pocket kings (Kc-Ks). Muchnik had a lot less outs going into the flop (10c-7c-5c), and when another club (3) prevented a straight draw on the turn, Amyx had made the higher flush and Muchnik was essentially drawing dead to the river (4c).

Mark Muchnik is runner up in the 2006 4th Annual Five-Star World Poker Classic $5,000 No-limit hold'em event, winning $348,065.

Nguyen is out in 3rd place ($174,030)

Nguyen raised to 200,000 (on the button) and Amyx (next to act) raised, all in. Muchnik got out of the way and Nguyen called. If Nguyen lost the hand he would face elimination. Nguyen turned over pocket dueces, but Amyx had aces in the hole. The board (Q-J-9-6-4) missed Nguyen, sending him to the rail in 3rd place ($174,030).

Down to Three

Here are the approximate chip counts:

1. Hoa Nguyen 1.6 Million
3. Jack Amyx 1.05 Million
5. Mark Muchnik 730,000

Mel Wiener is out in 4th place ($99,440)

Mel Wiener went all in, short stacked, against Hoa Nguyen. Nguyen had Wiener covered when he turned over A-Q. Wiener had only 10-6. The board completely missed both players, giving Nguyen the win and sending Wiener to the rail.

Mel Wiener went out in 4th place ($99,440).

Nick Hanna is out in 5th place ($74,585)

Mark Muchnik raised in late position and Nick Hanna went all in. Muchnik called and turned over "big-slick" (A-K). Hanna sullenly turned over A-J and watched helplessly as the board delivered five small cards with limited possibilities. Muchnik took down a monster pot worth almost 1 million, making him the new chip leader going into the next hand.

Chip Counts

Approximate chip counts:

1. Hoa Nguyen 450,000
2. Nick Hanna 520,000
3. Jack Amyx 630,000
4. Mel Wiener 835,000
5. Mark Muchnik 485,000

Three-way action, Two-way elimination

Don Zewin was in the small blind. John Unger (next to act) had the big blind. Jack Amyx (in middle position) limped in for the minimum bet. When the action was folded to Zewin, he raised for 250,000, putting enormous pressure on Unger to call with his last 50,000. Unger stewed a few moments, then pushed all in. Amyx called and it was three-way action going into the flop, with a side pot between Zewin and Amyx (Amex had everyone covered).
Unger had 8h-9c.
Zewin had Ah-Qc.
Amyx had pocket aces (As-Ac)
The flop came Kh-6c-2c, and Amyx was far ahead going into the turn (6h). The other two players were drawing dead to the river (3h). Jack Amyx eliminated, both Zewin and Unger.

John Unger went out in 7th place ($41,435)
Don Zewin went out in 6th place ($58,010)

Wiener cripples Unger

John Unger went all in with Qs-Kh (in early position) against Mel Wiener, who called with pocket aces (Ah-Ad). The board (Jh-Kc-9d-8c-5c) gave Wiener the win, crippling Unger, who had only 60,000 in chips remaining.

Hoa Nguyen went all in before the flop(5h-8d-2h) with 7h-5c and Mark Muchnik called with A-7. Nguyen had the best hand, with a pair of fives, going into the turn (10h), which also gave him a flush draw. The river (Jd) didn't help Muchnik and Nguyen doubled up through him. Nguyen has about 90,000 going into the next hand.

Two hands later...

Nguyen doubled up again through an unknown opponent, collecting a 3-way pot worth 380,000.
