Updates on Final Day (Mar 11, 05)

Danny Nguyen Wins the Bay 101's Shooting Star Tournament!

Hand #85 - Jay is short-stacked, and the blinds and antes put $110,000 in the pot before any action takes place. So Jay makes a move on the very first hand, pushing all in. Danny Nguyen quickly calls. Jay has K-4, and Danny has 4-3 -- Jay is in excellent position to double up on this hand, and give himself a little breathing room. The flop comes 10h-9h-2h, and Danny is the only one with a heart in his hand. So he's down to 11 outs -- nine hearts for a flush, and two non-heart 3s for a pair. The turn card is the 7c, and with his supporters chanting for a heart, the river card is a 3, making him a lowly pair of threes that earns Danny Nguyen a million dollars.

Danny Nguyen Doubles Up to a Dominating Chip Lead

Hand #84 - Jay Martens raises the blind to $180,000, and Danny Nguyen calls. The flop comes Ah-10h-8c, Danny comes out betting, and Jay calls. The turn card is the 3h, and Danny pushes all in. Everything happens so quickly as Jay calls and the crowd all leaps to their feet to get a good look at what could be the final hand. Danny flips over Ad-5h, for top pair. Jay shows Kh-10c for second pair, with a king-high flush draw. Jay is behind, and with one card to come, he needs a king, a 10, or a heart (13 outs). The river card is the 4c, and Danny Nguyen wins the pot to take a 10-to-1 chip lead, with roughly $4 million to Jay's $360,000.

Chip Counts

As we enter heads-up play, Jay Martens has the chip lead with $2,410,000 to Danny Nguyen's $1,965,000. The blinds are $30,000-$60,000, with a $10,000 ante.

Shana Brings in the Money

Shana Hiatt is part of the presentation to bring the money to the table, and this time the money comes in a clear star-shaped container that drops in from above, to represent the "Shooting Star" tournament here at the Bay 101. It's not the glitziest introduction for the money, but there's still $1 million in there.

Gus Hansen is Eliminated in Third Place ($320,000)

Hand #83 - Gus Hansen raises it to $120,000, and Danny Nguyen pushes all in. Gus thinks before calling, and shows K-10. He has two overcards to Danny's 9-9, but he's a slight underdog. The flop comes Q-8-4, and Gus has two cards to catch a pair or he's out of the tournament. But the turn card is a 9, making Danny a set and eliminating Gus in third place. Gus collects $320,000, and Danny Nguyen picks up his second bounty for busting out a "star."

Gus Wins a Hand as Only Gus Can ...

Hand #81 - Danny raises it to $120,000, and Gus calls. They see a flop of 8c-6c-6d, Danny pushes all in, and Gus calls. Danny shows 9-5, and Gus shows 10-7. Gus is actually in the lead with 10-high, and nothing changes when the last two cards come A-K.

Hand #82 - Gus raises to $100,000, and Jay reraises to $300,000. Gus folds.

Jay Martens Takes the Chip Lead -- at Gus Hansen's Expense

Hand #80 - Gus Hansen raises to $110,000, and Jay Martens reraises to $310,000. Gus calls. The flop comes 9h-6c-4d, and Gus bets out $800,000. Jay calls, which leaves him with just $30,000. (He has a few chips left, but if anyone was ever pot-committed ...) The turn card is the ace of hearts, and Jay has a "Why not?" look as he pushes his few remaining chips in. He's smiling, so that might mean something. Gus had the chips ready and calls immediately with K-9. Jay was smiling because his A-Q made top pair on the turn, and the river card was the 2d. Gus Hansen has just lost the biggest pot of the night, and he's down to about $465,000 in chips. Jay Martens is our new chip leader, with well over $2 million.

Danny Nguyen Regains the Lead -- For One Hand

Hand #78 - Danny and Gus both check a flop of Kc-Qs-7c. The turn is 8d, and Danny bets $160,000, and Gus calls. The river is 6d, and Danny pushes all in. Gus thinks for a long while, leaning back in his chair and playing with his chips. Gus decides to fold, and Danny takes the chip lead with about $1.8 million.

Hand #79 - Danny raises to $155,000, and Gus goes all in. Danny shows the ace of clubs and folds his hand. Gus takes the chip lead right back.

Chip Counts

Here are the chip counts: 1. Gus Hansen, $1.6 million / 2. Danny Nguyen, $1.485 million / 3. Jay Martens, $1.2 million

Down to Three Players

Hand #76 - Gus wins by betting on a flop of 7-2-2.

Hand #77 - Jay and Danny limp in to see Js-5s-3h, and Danny bets to win the pot
