The Highlights

On the current state of high-stakes cash games…

“To be honest, the games are extremely tough. You can’t tilt. You need rest. You got to be focused. I always describe it like this… When you used to play poker, you’d be swimming in the ocean and there’d be pools and pools of fish and you could just eat all day long. Sometimes you’d run into a shark like yourself, but you’d stay out of each other’s way because there was tons of fish. Nowadays, you are swimming in the ocean and just swimming and swimming with no fish anywhere. You bump into a shark and go your separate ways. Then you bump into another shark and you realize that eventually, you are going to have to battle a shark. It’s just the way that it is. Only the best are surviving.”

On getting one-upped by the poker brat…

“Me and my buddy Scotty Tickets went to a football game and thought we were big shots. It was the [San Francisco] 49ers playing the New York Giants and we’re sitting in row 1 on the 50-yard line. Next thing you know, the Niners got the ball on a big punt return and the coaches and players are running down the sideline to watch the play, and I look and there’s a guy in a big black coat running with everyone on the sidelines… and it’s Phil Hellmuth. Are you kidding me? He’s like right beside [Head Coach] Harbaugh! I thought I was the pimp sitting in row 1, and he’s on the sidelines!”

On how poker affects his diet…

“It’s tough because I’m an emotional eater. When you are getting torched by sports [betting] or torched in the poker game… You know, it’s funny. A buddy of mine walks by and says, ‘oh, you are doing well,’ and I’m like, ‘how do you know?’ He says, ‘because you are eating a salad.’ When he comes by and I’m eating three mounds of ice cream he knows not to bug FBT because he must be getting torched.”
