The Poker Player Alliance (PPA) got a boost of star power recently as Howard Lederer, poker pro, television host, and author, joined its board of directors.

"I am thrilled that Howard has agreed to join our board," said Michael Bolcerek, president of the PPA. "Howard's reputation within the poker community and his ongoing efforts on behalf of our organization and poker players to defend the game from attacks by Congress and others make him a great addition to the board."

Board members include Linda Johnson, Greg Dinkin, Mary Magazine, and Jan Fisher. At 27,000 strong, the grassroots PPA is quickly becoming the voice for poker players who want to fight for their game.

In April, the PPA teamed up with Lederer, Chris Ferguson, and Greg Raymer and met with members of Congress to try to educate them about the game of poker. The visit received national media attention.

Also receiving national attention are the efforts of lawmakers to end online poker. Playing poker online in Washington State is now a Class C felony, and a bill designed to stop wagering through the Internet will soon reach the House floor. Details about the bill can be found here and here; about Washington State's law, here.

Lederer, who is known as the "Professor" in poker circles, doesn't take his new board position lightly.

"The Poker Players Alliance's mission is critically important as the game has increasingly come under attack. The challenge of promoting and protecting poker is the reason I joined the PPA as a member and wanted to get personally involved by joining the PPA board of directors," he said. "Poker is under attack by Congress, and I believe that all poker players should join the PPA and tell Capitol Hill that we do not want the Federal government to ban an American tradition that we love."
