The World Poker Tour has wrapped up its visit to Morocco with German Sebastian Homann taking down the WPT Marrakech championship and its €244,508 top prize.
A field of 222 players shelled out €5,000 ($6,606) each to play. Pros Carlos Mortensen, David Benyamine, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Alexandre Gomes, Surinder Sunar were among the familiar faces who took their seats at the Casino de Marrakech to participate in the Chilipoker-sponsored event. But it was Homann who took the chip lead on day 1A and never looked back. He held the chip lead when he reached the final table on day 3, and soon expanded his lead with aggressive play. But when action reached heads up, Homann’s steamrolling temporarily stalled. He gave up the chip lead to France’s Guillaume Cescut at one point, but the very next hand Homann took it back, and more.
On the last hand of the event, a short-stacked Cescut raised to 125,000 and Homann made the call. All of the money went into the pot on a J-4-3 flop. Homann held the leading J-9 and Cescut was in trouble with just A-4. The board didn’t save the Frenchman, and Homann held on to win his first WPT championship in impressive fashion.
