Dan 'jungleman12' Cates has been one of the biggest cash-game winners in 2010Earlier this month Dan “jungleman12” Cates sat down at the virtual felt with perhaps the wealthiest opponent he has ever faced. However, the 21-year-old Maryland native wasn’t playing his usual nosebleed stakes.

Cates put in a $1-$2 pot-limit Omaha session with Cristiano “CR7sete” Ronaldo — one of the best soccer players in the world and the highest paid athlete in the sport.

The soccer star had contacted the online pro through Skype, and it wasn’t long before the two were playing low-stakes poker together.

“We were just mostly playing for fun,” Cates said. “He likes poker and gambling, but he’s not a gamblingaholic. He contacted me, and we talked for a bit before deciding to play. I wasn’t playing to win money. It kind of sucked being owned by him though. He beat me for about eight buy-ins. I was thinking, ‘wow, I am getting destroyed by this guy and he hardly plays.’ I wasn’t expecting that at all.”

Although Cates had a losing session versus the forward for Real Madrid about two weeks ago, he said he hasn’t kept track of the amount of money won or lost to the $16-million-a-year athlete. The duo have also played sessions of hold’em and deuce-to-seven together in the past.

Cristiano RonaldoCates, who can found playing as high as $500-$1,000 and routinely multitabling $200-$400 in the Durrrr Challege, said the games with Ronaldo were a bit different than what he is used to.

“They were interesting to say the least,” Cates said. “He is kind of integrating into the poker scene, but he has football and sh*t I’m sure. He understands some things about poker. He is still learning.”

Cates said Ronaldo hasn’t asked him for any poker advice, and he couldn’t see the soccer star grinding online because he isn’t serious about the game right now. However, Cates said Ronaldo has kicked some poker compliments his way.

“I haven’t played with anyone who is as big of a celebrity as him,” Cates said. “It is cool, but at the same time, I wasn’t like ‘Oh my God, I am playing Cristiano Ronaldo.’ He is just another guy. He is a regular person. We both respect each other’s games. I don’t follow football, but from what I understand he is one of the best players ever. I would definitely consider coaching him [in poker] if he ever asked, as long as I have enough time. I might charge him a couple drinks or something like that.”
