The inaugural National Poker League Vegas Open commenced June 2 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the first in a series of NPL circuit events to hit the international circuit. Gone are the days when a televised poker competition required huge buy-ins to compete. The NPL offers players with lots of game and smaller bankrolls a chance to become television stars. INHD recorded the action from start to finish, and will begin broadcasting the new series in high definition over 13 episodes beginning July 2.
The tournament was open to the public and attracted hundreds of players to Caesars' new luxurious 14,500 square foot poker room.
Airing July 2 on INHD - Preliminary event #1 started the Vegas Open with 79 players creating a $76,000 prize pool. The two-daytournament paid 10 spots, with first place of $26,821. Newcomers Keith Tilston, Brian Niekerk, Jesse Bissonette, and chip leader Robert Cheung, along with veteran poker players Tony Cousineau and Max Pescatori (coming in short-stacked), enteredthe final table in what promises to be an action-packed first airing of poker on INHD. Cousineauwent on the attack in early rounds, and then Tilston and Cheung turned up the heat as the two clashed on several occasions. See who came out on top when action airs July 2.
The winners from each of the 10 daily $1,000 preliminary tournaments went on to compete in the semifinals, where the tournament took on an unusual twist. Those 10 winners returned on Friday, June 16, and play continued as players entered a random drawing to determine who would compete against whom in a series of $25,000 heads-up freeroll matches. In the end, five players advanced to Saturday's winner-take-all one-table freeroll competition, and the last man standing was crowned NPL's Vegas Open champion, awarded the first-ever NPL trophy, and took home $100,000 in prize money.
Quick program editing will allow the NPL Vegas Open to air the first of 13 programs on Sunday, July 2, at 10:30 p.m. EST in high definition on the INHD Network, one of the most widely distributed HD networks on cable today. Tournament directors and developers Rob Huxley and Kyle Morris, along with INHD executives, gave the press a sneak preview of an impressively slick production, and the NPL Vegas Open promises television viewers fast-paced action and sleek graphics, all displayed in high definition.
There will be plenty of entertainment and fresh poker analysis as Oliver Nejad delivers fresh commentary, offering his own brand of solid poker advice, and WSOP champion Scott Fischman offers his "In The Tank" poker tips. These taped segments will be integrated into each televised episode, along with feature segments about the Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino, profiles and interviews with the players, a poker pro "Tip of the Day," a tournament "Play of the Day," along with an introductory INHD segment called "Las Vegas: High Rolling and High Living Mojo Style."
