The Dutch Government confirmed at the weekend it is to open up and regulate the online gaming market including poker.
Last year a government commission recommended such regulation.
All forms of gambling in the country have technically been under control of state organs such as Holland Casinos until now, even though it is estimated that up to 200,000 people play online poker in defiance of the law.
Jaap Oosterveer of the Dutch Ministry of Public Safety and Justice told news agency Reuters that, “It is a big shift (in policy), but this is a new government with a more liberal approach.”
The country follows France, Sweden, Italy, Austria, and the UK in regulating online gambling by autioning licences to companies who offer online poker, casino, bingo, and sports.
The government expects the Internet gambling and lottery licenses will generate at least €10 million euro per year in fees from 2015.
Last year a Dutch court ruled poker was a skill game in a long-running case.
