The final table at the World Series of Poker Circuit $1,500 no-limit hold’em main event crowned a champion today at the Harrah’s in St. Louis. That champion was Kyle Cartwright who came into the final table with a sizable chip lead and he used it well to book a $142,290 payday by the end of the tournament. He also took home a gold ring and a seat in the WSOP Circuit National Championship for his triumph over a total field of 449 players.
Read on below to see how he claimed the first major title of his career and his third gold ring of 2011. Cartwright won two preliminary tournaments at the WSOP Circuit stop at the Harrah’s in Tunica in February. Here is a look at the chip counts when the final table began:
Seat | Player | Chips |
1 | Kyle Cartwright | 2,875,000 |
2 | Mitch Franks | 460,000 |
3 | Nick Jivkov | 206,000 |
4 | Ron Segni | 983,000 |
5 | Asheesh Boyapati | 1,138,000 |
6 | Chris Viox | 346,000 |
7 | Troy Weber | 1,006,000 |
8 | Steve Goff | 1,270,000 |
9 | Phil Stelzer | 637,000 |
It took just a few minutes for the first player to fall and that victim was Nick Jivkov who busted in ninth place ($13,453). His A-9 lost a race to the pocket sevens of Ron Segni. A busy first hour at the final table also saw Steve Goff (eighth place — $16,842), Mitch Franks (seventh place — $21,382), and Chris Viox (sixth place — $27,533) all hit the rail. Viox was the most notable player left in the field and he took his career earning to more than $600,000 with the cash. His A-Q lost a race to Cartwright to seal his fate.
Troy Weber kept the quick pace of eliminations going when he busted in fifth place to kick off the second hour of play at the final table. He was the one holding a pocket pair in the race, but his fives fell to the A-J of Asheesh Boyapati on a K-J-3-9-7 board. The action slowed a bit at that point as the players took turns doubling up and in some cases tripling up before the elimination of Phil Stelzer in fourth place ($47,705).
That left the final three contestants but it took just 17 minutes to decide a champion. Segni took his leave in third place when his A-10 was dominated preflop by the A-K of Cartwright. There was no 10 in store for Segni and he took home $64,249 in prize money. Cartwright took his chips into the heads-up final, where he held a nice lead of 6.8 million over the 2.1 million of Boyapati.
On the final hand Cartwright raised to 110,000 on the button preflop and Boyapati reraised all in for 1.6 million. Cartwright made the call and they flipped over their cards:
Cartwright: K Q
Boyapati: 8 5
Board: J 10 2 10 3
Boyapati was eliminated in second place and he took home $87,927 as the runner up. Cartwright took home the top prize of $142,290 as the WSOP Circuit champion.
