It got started a bit late, but at 12:35 p.m., World Series of Poker tournament director Jack Effel took the stage in the Pavilion Room at the Rio to officially kick off this summer’s festivities.
Play began a bit later than scheduled due to a logistical problem, where multiple players were given identical seating assignments. The tournament staff quickly resolved the issue and the players were seated at new tables.
This is Effel’s sixth year at the helm of the WSOP and this year, he allowed the participants of event no. 1, the $500 Casino’s Employees Event, to give their own “Shuffle Up and Deal” announcement.
Last year, Hoai Pham defeated a field of 721 entrants to capture the bracelet and the $71,424 first-place prize. Registration is still open for 2011’s tournament, but the field has already surpassed last year’s numbers.
