The casinos of Atlantic City reopened at 7 this morning.

The casinos were closed because state lawmakers couldn't agree on a new budget before a new one expired on July 1. New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine ordered all but essential government offices closed until lawmakers passed a budget for this fiscal year.

That included the state's Casino Control Commission, which closed Wednesday, leaving New Jersey's casino industry without inspectors and thereby forcing the closings. The Commission ordered the casinos closed July 5, in a special meeting on June 30.

Lawmakers came to a budget agreement sometime Thursday, but the casinos had to wait until today to receive word from the Commission before reopening. The casinos were on standby since Thursday, anticipating the go-ahead.
