Ivey Boycotts WSOP And Files Lawsuit Against Tiltware; Players React And More

This week was another debate-inducing week in the world of poker, this time largely surrounding Full Tilt and the World Series. As the world’s most anticipated festival kicked-off, it seemed so too did a few players.

With all eyes on who would turn out for the WSOP given that there are many concerns about owed money, branding, and of course, less qualifiers, many people were blown away when Phil Ivey hit the headlines to tell the world he would not attend the Series and on top of that he had filed a lawsuit against Tiltware claiming $150 million in damages.

Less than 24 hours later, Tiltware responded with a statement which began, “Contrary to his sanctimonious public statements, Phil Ivey’s meritless lawsuit is about helping just one player – himself.” (Read the full statement here.) The poker community were shocked by this public dispute and many had different views on Ivey’s opinion and actions. This, of course, could clearly be seen on Twitter with players like Andrew Robl posting, “Tweeters: I do not think phil Ivey did anything shady. What he did may of even been a good move for him personally.” He continued, “But it no way does it help FTP players get paid. It hurts them.”

Daniel Negreanu wrote, “Read Ivey’s statement on not playing the WSOP. Tough spot, but I definitely admire his decision to put the players funds before bracelets.” He added, “I imagine it was an uber tough decision because Ivey loves WSOP, but he couldn’t in good conscious play while US customers haven’t been paid”

Tom Dwan kept it short, “Yo @philivey poker isn’t a sport… Rest of your statement is awesome though.” He later said, “Wowow ftp statement” and followed this up with, “I bet both sides have better intentions than the other realizes fwiw”

Tom "Durrrr" DwanDurrrr fans can rest assured as before he wrote all this, he tweeted, “I’ll be playing wsop. Feel fine about that morally b/c I’ve already said I’ll give back 100% I ws paid by ftp if players aren’t paid in full”

Another player tweeting his opinion was Mike Matusow. On Jun. 2, he twittered, “just read this ivey lawsuit what a big bunch of bullshit from a person that cares only about himself not any players!”

Despite this story being so huge, there was a lot of “side action”, so to speak, going on at the WSOP. For instance a near bust-up between John Juanda and James Bord occurred, plus the Twitter wires were lit up with people speaking about who was wearing a patch, who wasn’t, who showed up, and who didn’t. Event attendance was also commented on in the Twitter sphere. For example on Jun. 1, Matusow tweeted, “wow im shocked they dont even have 128 players for 25k hu”

On a lighter note, Lex Veldhuis was getting a good dose of Men Nguyen. He recently tweeted, “Quote of the century by Men The Master: ’You’re a cheater, trying to take my money.’ He is causing a big scene being obnoxious as always.” And, “Men The Master legendary quote #2: ‘when did I ever cheat?’. He is on fire”

All this while Randal Flowers was knocked off his pedestal on the WPT. On May 29 he tweeted, “Fuck. Some 18 y/o swede broke my record for youngest to ever win a WPT. If he’s Swedish though I’m probably safe for youngest to 2 WPT’s.”
