Jeff Shulman Does It AgainWins His Third Poker Superstars Invitational 3 Match |
|
Card Player Magazine's CEO Jeff Shulman didn't need the 10 points that come with winning a Poker Superstars Invitational 3 match. His 32-point total going into his last match was plenty good enough to advance to the second round of 16, but he went out and won his last match anyway, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard and putting another $10,000 into his pocket.
This was the last match for six of the players, and it featured a desperate group who all needed at least a handful of points to assure themselves they will move on into the second round. Mike Sexton (16 pts.), Mike Matusow (17 pts.), Carlos Mortensen (16 pts.), and Jennifer Tilly (17 pts.) all found themselves right against the elimination bubble going into their fifth and final match. Each of them needed to finish at least third to assure they'd move on.
Shulman and Ted Forrest were the only two players who came into the match with little on the line. Shulman had already seized his second-round pass and Forrest had no chance to move on since he brought only 3 points into the match.
Unfortunately for Tilly, the night wouldn't belong to her. She was the first to go, which earned her 0 points and an early goodbye from the PSIT 3. Tilly, last year's World Series of Poker ladies' event champion, was the first person knocked from her table three out of five times. She kept herself in the contest with a win last week and a second-place finish in week 1, and would have moved on if she placed third or better.
Forrest was next to go. He finished PSIT 3 with a league-low 4 points.
His 19points will probably not be enough for Sexton to advance, but that's how many he finished with, thanks to his fourth-place showing in the match shown Sunday.
Mortensen is in a little better position, but his fate is still yet to be determined. He finished third and earned 5 points in his last match and his 21 points just might be enough to get him into the second round.
Matusow will move on thanks to a strong finish. He brought 0 points into his third elimination match, but racked up a first and two second places in his last three. If his roll continues, look for Matusow to make some waves in round 2.
Next week, the match between Todd Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Mimi Tran, Daniel Negreanu, Joe Hachem, and Cyndy Violette will be shown on FSN. PSIT 3 is aired Sundays on the sports channel, usually at 8 p.m. local time, but check your local listing to be sure.
