World Series of Poker Main Event Day 5 Recap

Bach Leads Stacked Top 10

Print-icon

David BachWith two hour blind levels and a slow moving structure, you would think that the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event would move along at a snail’s pace as the players patiently wait for the best opportunity to commit their stacks.

Instead, this year’s event has moved along like a runaway freight train. A total of 378 players survived to battle it out on day 5, but after just four levels, the field is already down to 142 and many are already starting to see the light at the end of the November Nine tunnel. Never mind the fact that we have until Tuesday to do it.

Leading those survivors into Sunday’s action is David Bach, who punished his opponents all day long with well-time bets and raises.

During the last level of the night, Bach called Max Heinzelmann’s all in holding pocket kings, but wasn’t happy to see his hyper-aggressive opponent turn over pocket aces. The board rolled out four diamonds, however, and Bach took the pot and claimed the knockout. He bagged up for the night with 4,706,000.

The rest of the top ten is littered with well-known professionals, including Phil Collins (fourth), Ben Lamb (fifth), Sebastian Ruthenberg (seventh), Lars Bonding (eighth) and Bryan Devonshire (ninth).

Other notables still in the hunt include J.P. Kelly, Valdimir Geshkenbein, Fred Berger, Tony Hachem, Joseph Cheong, Christian Harder, Matt Giannetti, Matt Kay, David Sands, Jean-Robert Bellande, Allen Cunningham, Sami Kelopuro, Rupert Elder, Peter Feldman, Ray Henson, Steve Brecher, Eli Elezra, Sorel Mizzi and Erick Lindgren.

Play will resume at noon on Sunday and Card Player will be providing level-by-level updates of all the action straight from the tournament floor at the Rio.

Here is a look at the overnight chip counts.
