August Tournament Poker PreviewMajor Tours Start Back Up In August After Some Time Off During The Summer |
|
Earlier this week Card Player took a look at the major international tours taking place across the world during the late parts of 2011. These are the big money tournaments that will attract the largest fields of U.S. and European professionals, while awarding prize pools in the millions. In this monthly preview we will look a little deeper at the tournament series taking place in August and U.S. regional events to see where players can take home points in the Card Player Player of the Year race late this summer.
The World Tours Wake from Summer-Time Hibernation in August

Elsewhere in Europe there is a U.K. and Ireland Poker Tour stop in Edinburgh.
Australasia will feature a Asian Poker Tour event in Manila and a Australia New Zealand Poker Tour stop in New Zealand for Snowfest in Queenstown. Other action south of the equator includes a Latin American Poker Tour stop in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
Back in the States the biggest tournament on the agenda is the Legends of Poker in Southern California, which features a World Poker Tour $3,500 main event later in the month. Early August also features the first stop for the Epic Poker League at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a Pro-Am tournament, charity event, and $20,000 main event during the first two weeks of August.

August is a Time for Legends in Southern California
The month of August will see tournament series across the United States from New England to Southern California. The largest tournament series to take place this month will be the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California, which is just outside of Los Angeles. The series will feature a baker’s dozen worth of events that will have points up for grabs in the POY race. The 20-event tournament series will be contested from July 28 to August 30. The series leads up to the World Poker Tour $3,500 no-limit hold’em main event on August 25-30. This year marks the 10-year anniversary that the Legends of Poker main event has been partnered with the WPT.
There will be four tournament series to choose from in the Northeast (Foxwoods Mega Stack Challenge in Mashantucket, Connecticut and the Parx Open Poker Classic in Bensalem, Pennsylvania) and the Midwest (Indiana State Poker Classic in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and the River Poker Tournament in Thackerville, Oklahoma) during August.
While there are many options across the country during this late summer month the Florida and Gulf Coast region continues to emerge as a major poker hub. That momentum is highlighted by three tournament series that feature POY points. The WPT Regional tour pulls into Jacksonville at the Orange Park Kennel Club from August 5-17. There are 11 tournaments in all with 8 POY events, and the series is anchored by a $1,500 main event. The Palm Beach Poker Classic runs later in the month (August 22-27) in the southern part of the state and it is anchored by a $500 main event that has POY points up for grabs.
The Gulf Coast Poker Championship pulls back into Biloxi, Mississippi once again in 2010 and this year the series runs from August 25-September 5. There are a dozen events on the schedule with five offering POY prizes. The series will feature a $3,000 main event that starts on September 4.
