New Round Starts Next Week

Poker cognoscenti don't consider Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen to be two of the best players in the world for nothing, and their performance during their last Poker Supers Invitational 3 (PSIT 3) elimination match showed why this is true.

Both Ivey and Hansen needed to perform in their last match in order to advance to the second round of 16 players. Hansen came into the match third from the bottom with 11 points, and Ivey need at least a third place finish and the five points that come with it in order to squeak in.

Freddy Deeb was also facing the bubble with 17 points. He needed to watch two players get knocked out before he would advance. They all did what they had to do.

Hansen moved on by winning elimination match 20, which was the last match in the first round of PSIT 3. He won the heads-up battle against Antonio Esfandiari, who moved into second-place on the leader board with 36 points.

Ivey needed a third and got a third. His 21 points gave him a ticket into the second round of 16. Like Ivey, Deeb got exactly what he needed. He needed three points to assure a pass, and that what he got by finishing fourth.

Chris Moneymaker, who didn't seem to win one race during any of his five matches, still wasn't totally out of the contest as his last match started. He needed a win, but couldn't get past fifth-place, and finished the season with 13 points. That means that none of the last three World Series of Poker champs who took part in this tournament made it passed the first round.

Phil Hellmuth knew he was in the second round and was the first to go in elimination match 20. He finished round one with 20 points.

The second round of 16 players will begin to be shown on FSN next week. Each week will show how a table of four pans outs. The winner of the table moves on to the round of eighth players. The remaining three players then play again, and the winner of that one also moves forward.

Next week, Card Player CEO Jeff Shulman, Mike Matusow, Eli Elezra and Mike Sexton do battle.

PSIT 3 is shown on FSN every Sunday night at 8 p.m., but check your local listings to confirm show times. Click here to visit CardPlayer.com's complete Internet coverage of the series.
