Epic Poker League Series 2 Main Event Draws Smaller Field

Defending Champion Chino Rheem Still In The Hunt

The second $20,000 main event of the inaugural Epic Poker League season was not quite as successful as the first, only attracting 97 entrants, a total drop off of 40 players.

Though there were a number of factors that led to a poor turnout, the primary culprit seemed to be the ongoing PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), which began on Sunday. The popular online poker series caused many of the European card-carrying members of the EPL to stay home and even a couple dozen American players to temporarily move abroad to play.

Of course, the smaller field size won’t discourage the 97 who did play on Tuesday, since they’ll be battling less players for a part of the $400,000 overlay, which juiced the prize pool up to a whopping $2,301,200.

A total of 12 players will make the money, getting paid at least $46,020. The winner will take home $762,410, the Champion’s ring and a spot in the EPL Championship.

Only 50 players survived the first day of play and they’ll return on Wednesday for five levels before calling it a day. Leading the way in the overnight chip counts is Pro/Am qualifier Jamie Kaplan, who has a slight advantage over Dan O’Brien. Defending champion Chino Rheem is currently in sixth place overall.
