Last year at the European Short-Handed Poker Championships it was an Irishman who outlasted the throng of French. This year, Englishman Stephen King would fight tooth and nail for the title and €63,000 top prize.

King’s final opponent was Belgian player Michael Gathy and the two made a deal heads up which saw King walk away with the best of it. Gathy received €54,300 for second place.

It was the third year the six-max event was held, and every year it gets bigger. Last year, Alan Trueick bested the 312-strong field to take home the €40,142 top prize. This year the €550 buy-in main event attracted 656 players, a lot of them French as the event is sponsored by Winamax. It was the first time D4 Events offered re-entries into an event with this level of buy-in and this was a great success as 26 percent of those who busted out on day 1A re-entered on day 1B.

One of the re-entries on the second starting day was the eventual champion, King; he was knocked out originally by Jean-Claude Marets who actually went on to make the final table where he had to battle the Englishman once again.

Here are the final table results and payouts:

1. Steven King (England) – €63,000 (post-deal)
2. Michael Gathy (Belgium) – €54,300 (post-deal)
3. Paulo Dos Santos Ferreira (Portugal) – €34,190
4. Jonathan Hamard (France) – €24,700
5. Jean-Claude Marets (France) – €17,650
6. Richard Thibault (France) – €11,230

The event now goes on tour and will stop in Luton, Vienna, and Coventry in the upcoming months.
