Australian Banks Don’t Want Online Gambling Payment Restrictions

The Australian Bankers’ Association has told the government it does not want restrictions placed on financial transactions to or from online gambling sites including poker.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald Steven Munchenberg of the ABA told a joint select committee on gambling reform that the proposed move was ‘not straightforward and that, “[If] Australia was identified as a jurisdiction where payment obligations may not be fulfilled in a certain and timely manner, it is possible that merchants and online service providers will refuse to accept business and payments from customers designated as originating from Australia.”

Credit card issuer Visa told the committee the technology needed was unworkable.

The statements come in the wake of a bill introduced by Senator Nick Xenophon to restrict financial transactions on prohibited internet gambling sites.

Australians are believed to gamble almost $1 billion a year on sites deemed illegal by the government.
