Russian Wins Record-Breaking PokerStars Event

PokerStars marked its 10th anniversary by challenging its previous Guinness World Record for the largest poker tournament. The site celebrated in style when the $1 buy-in tournament’s 200,000 cap was reached about three-and-a-half hours before the event began.

The last record was set at 149,196 but with the approval of a Guinness World Records representative 200,000 is the new figure to beat.

The $250,000 guaranteed event set aside $50,000 for the winner. However due to a deal threehanded the eventual champ, “sokoluk1991”, received $40,258.83.

The world’s biggest ever online poker tournament saw a starting stack of 2,000 and featured five-minute levels with antes after 20 minutes. Action was relentless with 5,000 eliminated within the first five minutes, and as play strove towards only its second hour of play the field was sliced in two.

The final hand to be played came just over seven hours in with blinds of 5 million-10 million. “Kaitz20” moved all in for just under 120 million in chips and sokoluk1991 made the call. Kaitz20 held A 9 while sokoluk1991 had A Q. The board came Q J 6 7 10 and the Russian was crowned champion of this record-breaking event.
