Credit: Neil StoddartThe Germans have done it yet again. This time at the European Poker Tour €5,300 buy-in main event in Prague, and this time it was 21-year-old business science student Martin Finger.

Finger topped a record-breaking field of 722 to become the victor of the biggest major poker tournament ever held in the Czech Republic. It was Finger’s first EPT main event cash out of 10 tries, but the €720,000 first-place prize was worth the wait. Finger has done very well in EPT side events in the past but now he can add a main event title to his name.

To get to heads up, Finger and Dutchman David Boyacayin had to get rid of Nicolas Levi but the Frenchman fell early when he flopped two pair against Boyacayin’s top set.

Finger began what was to become a four-hour heads up with a 4-1 chip lead but Boyacayin’s persistence and determination made for an action-packed battle which Finger had to struggle to overcome. Boyaciyan won the Amsterdam Master Classics last month for €382,200 but it was not to be for the Dutch banker in Prague and, after a heads-up deal, he had to settle for the second-place prize of €535,000.

The final hand came when Boyaciyan opened to 380,000 and was three-bet to 875,000. Boyaciyan then popped it to 2 million and Finger moved all in in. Boyaciyan made the call and the two revealed their cards. Boyaciyan held 10Heart Suit 10Spade Suit while Finger showed AHeart Suit KSpade Suit. The flop was dealt KHeart Suit KDiamond Suit 6Heart Suit, a major thumbs up for finger. Boyaciyan could not improve on the QClub Suit turn or 9Diamond Suit river and the German PokerStars Supernova Elite became the EPT’s latest champ.

Finger said, “It feels really amazing to win. I feel great. It was a pretty tough final table but I just tried to be really aggressive and it worked.”

Here are the final-table results and payouts:

1. Martin Finger (Germany) €720,000 (heads-up deal)
2. David Boyacayin (Netherlands) €535,000
3. Nicolas Levi (France) €270,000

5. Denys Drobyna (Ukraine) €160,000
6. Ari Engel (United States) €125,000
